Husband and I will be spending a week near Franklin NC in mid-September. Would appreciate any tips for where to rockhound. We have done the pay-to-mine bucket of dirt places before. Any ideas on finding neat rocks on ones own? All ideas would be welcome.

If you go on past Franklin on 64, you can go to Buck Creek and to Chunky Gal to find garnets and corundum, respectively. I will look up the link and come back and post it. Ken

Sorry, but most of the National Forests are closed to rockhounding at this time. Here is a link to some of them. www.wncrocks.com/pointsofaccess/pointsofaccess.htmThe ONLY two mines in the Franklin area that are NOT salted are the Cherokee and the Mason(Not Mason Mountain) The Mason is $30 a day and you dig your own buckets. I think that the Cherokee is about $10. Ken

Yep, the one to ask is Ken. He sure knows that area well and has some beautiful stuff from that area. Fran

Also, stop in the Ruby City Rock Shop in the middle of town. They have the best museum and it is free. You can also ask about Buck Creek and Chunky Gal and the Herbert Mines out on 64 W. Ken

Ken, I have been in the Ruby City rock shop a couple of times and it is certainly on our agenda this trip. Thanks for all your help and info.
