I bought a box from Michael John in July and have been trying to ether get the box or my money back without any success. I even contacted Paypal and they could not get in touch with him. I know that I am not the only one this is happening to.( I have been in contact with other members) I know he is having a hard time but he needs to do the right thing. I know that he is friends with a lot of RTH members but he took $30 from me and more from others and I think everyone should know. Before everyone starts saying anything about him not knowing about it he got the payment out of his account with all the info on it.

I have been told that he might have a debit card and not need to transfer the money BUT he still knew that the money did not just appear in the account and that he owes somebody for it.

he stole $30 from me and more from others and I think everyone should know. Kap, I totally understand your frustration but this guy did not intent to steal from you. I'm sure of that. Michael frequently noted how close he was to not making his rent or paying his bills. Obviously he was not exaggerating. Clearly he has hit a very rough patch but I'm sure that whenever he gets some work and can get back on his feet you'll get you're order. He is not a scammer. He doesn't make enough on these boxes for it to be a successful scam anyway. All the other con artists would be laughing and making fun of him. |

So if you bought something from someone that you don't know on Ebay and they did not send it to you and they did not let you know anything it would be alright? I don't think so you would be posting about what a bad seller they was and letting everyone know. That is theft by deception. It might not have been his intent but it still happened. I know he is having a bad time I sold some boxes of rough on his PIF to help him, but if he can get on a computer and transfer his paypal money out knowing what it is for then he should at least send a message saying he might be late shipping. I never said anything about a scam just that he took my money. I'm sorry but no mater what you say thats WRONG!

sorry to hear that, keith....... i hope you get your rocks. Thanks for letting us know. i have to agree with you though, if he can get to a computer to get the money welllllllll you know the rest.

I want everyone to know it's not all about the rocks (it's not like I need them  or the money. It's the way it happened, all it would have taken was letting me know what was going on and all would have been good. Keith |

Keith, I think in one of his threads he said he had a PayPal debit card, and that's how he accesses the money, no computer needed. You are right, the way it happened, is not good-- like he dropped off the face of the Earth. Maybe Mark and Sands should lock any rock sale threads he had open so nobody else unknowingly sends money to his account until we know what's going on (if we ever find out).
This doesn't look good at all. He wouldn't have done this intentionally, something serious must have happened. I absolutely respect how you feel Keith and Snuffy. It's not right that this happened.

I am really sorry to hear this.
MJ has always been good at keeping up. He has been going through some rough times.
A couple months back I ordered a box from him and he stalled on getting it to me.
He kept me fully aware of the situation and even though he was late getting the box to me, he eventually did.
I do not understand why he is not communicating with anyone as that just doesn't seem to be his norm.
Just my two cents ...

I've got to agree. He didn't do it on purpose, I'd swear to that. I've had late deliveries from MJ, but he always put such great material in there, that the wait was worth it.
Also, I get the money out of my paypal acct with a debit card. No internet needed.
We hope to see MJ in late Sept to go hounding with him. I haven't been able to make contact either, but, if we can find him in Parumph, I'll let him know what's up & that he needs to take care of this business. Does anyone know his last name? I'm sure it'll help us find him.

I called his cell phone number to see if he was OK, it has been disconnected.
I don't know any other way to contact him.

I'm still waiting on a box too. Never had a problem in the past but i sent money back in early july and have not heard a thing.

I agree with all thats been said. I know he is having a rough time right now but there ARE ways he could have contacted at least someone to let everyone know. Free public internet through a library, or just someone in general with internet access. Nearly all of us know many people with internet access and Im sure someone wouldnt mind him sitting at their computer long enough to log in to RTH. Even a quick phone call from a pay phone or someone's cell phone to another rockhound that he knows that could pass the message on.
Rough times are not fun but when someone sends you money, and part of that money was shipping for the rocks they SHOULD have been sent one way or another.

I just wanted to add this, I think it is good that kap posted and all who commented.
I looked back and one of Michaeljohns last requests he made in a reply on one of his sales threads in July was for prayers. It was not in the beginning but towards the end of the thread.
I hope this is straightened out and as Kap said, it is more the lack of communication than anything.

I'm sorry but no mater what you say thats WRONG! Keith, like I said, I understand your frustration. It's valid. He definitely should not have taken your money if he couldn't get your order out to you right away. I would be frustrated too. I'm just saying that I do not think that Michael John is a con artist. I think at his first opportunity you're going to get your rocks with an apology and an explanation. This guy loves rockhounding. He loves seeing what people create from the rocks that he finds. Not to be his personal apologist but he could be in the hospital for all we know. I'd hold off on using words like theft and stealing until we get more information. |

Okay, I'm getting really worried. I mean, his last login was July 22nd where he reduced those boxes because he was desperate and asked for prayers. And he was talking about renting/borrowing a couple of mules and going into the desert for rocks.
Does anyone have any clues, from PM's with him on how we could get in touch with him or someone that knows him in Pahrump? Steve and I have a few clues and hit dead ends so far.
I know he has a son in Indiana who will be starting college in the fall, from a thread on here.
I do have his last mailing address (not going to disclose it publicly).
Does anyone have anything else we can go on?

I agree with everything that has been said. Both sides are correct. I started the Pay It Forward for Michael John several months ago. I knew he needed the help. In my heart, I wish he would not have continued on with so many sales...I think he should have done a little more on his own. Tried to stand on his own two feet instead of depending on the board so much.
That being said, I am kind of worried about him. I understand that his girlfriend has been very, very sick. I hope he didn't loose her. He was supporting her, her medical bills, a child and himself.
At this point, I think we should all send him prayers until we know exactly what happened. This really is not like him.
MJ, if you read this................my prayers are with you!

I did a pretty extensive web search and could not find anything on him: no arrests, no obituaries, no addresses, no news of any kind. So, maybe no news IS good news.
