Hi all,
Dennis and I are going to visit family over in Wallula, Washington on Thursday. Just wondering if anyone knows of any areas of interest for rockhounding in Southeast, Washington/Northeast Oregon? Wallula, Walla Walla, Hermiston, Umatilla or any other surrounding areas?
I think I may have asked this question a while back but I dont think I really got any responses. That might mean there are no good rocks LOL I know there's plenty of basalt.
Thanks,
Shannon

Hi Shannon,
I'm no help, but I've been wondering the same thing. My wife has a trip for work coming up and I'd like to go and do some hounding. The closest place I've found is Ellensburg, but that's a ways away and I understand the agate is pretty rare.
I'll be watching to see if there are any recommendations!
Chuck

Opal Butte is in the Umatilla area (RT 207 S of Ruggs). You could explore that area. You could also call/email Dale Huett to see if he'd let you do some collecting at his claim. www.wcmining.com/ws/1FS/fs.html

Shannon:
You can find thunder eggs, at both Little Naches, and at Rimrock lake.

Thanks Woody!
We ended up not going up there but are still planning on going in a few weeks. I got in contact with Dale from West Coast Mining and he said there wasnt much in the general area, that its a "dud" area as far as rockhounding was concerned, but that I was more than welcome to dig through his stuff in his yard, but have to pay for it of course LOL.

Shannon: Looks like I am about a week late....been out flat on morphine to deal with the blown disc. I had bulged it, got a wee bit better, then went and blew it. Once again, I am back on my feet, and off the morphine.
BTW, our clubs September (19-20) trip is to Rimrock, and Little Naches for thunder eggs. Woody

Yeah, I've hunted the Little Naches area because my wife sis has a ranch there. The thunderegg matrix stuff from there is very much like rainforest jasper. I'm working on a cab from there right now.....Mel

Two books should help you decide where you can go: Gem Trails of Washington and Gem Trails of Oregon. The NEW version by Garrett Romaine, not the old one.
