Basanite (a black, fine-grained variety of jasper) is not the easiest material to find here in the east (or on eBay) when you're looking to back up a plume cab, for instance.
One of the dealers at the East Coast show had a tray full of jet black slabs. Hey . . . "What's this stuff?"
He said "Black Onyx, otherwise known as dyed Brazilian agate."
Perfect! The pieces were big enough for two or three cabs each, already cut thin, cheap, and you know the agate will polish like a charm.

Most of the black Onyx that I have seen in slabs are in the $20 to $30 dollar a pound range. How much cheaper have you found it to be? I guess I have been spoiled. I routinely see Basanite at shows here in California in the $3 a pound range. Bob

I have some fossil Myrtle wood that's nice and black. I need to try some doublets and triplets.

Yeah, Bob, we talked about this over a year ago. I had seen just one guy selling Basanite on eBay, for $30+/lb, which you said was crazy, and it still had to be slabbed. I've never seen it at any rock show around here, just had one or two small freebies from Tiger Oak when I bought something.
The black onyx was $10/lb. I picked out half a dozen slabs for $8.

Yeah, in the west black petrified wood is fairly common and basanite seems fairly common at shows too. I hate to admit it but I've actually used black felt behind clear cabs when the cab goes into a mount where the back is covered. You can also get some interesting effects by using various colored foils behind clear cabs in that same sort of mount. Indian Green Moss with a shiney silver foil backing looks very cool and blue foil looks very cool as a backing for clear chalcedony giving it a nice blue color......Mel
