Flint Ridge is about 2.5 hours south of me. Anyone know of a place to collect for the public - fee or free?
Thanks.

Howdy, A good starting point might be this guy. I buy my Flint Ridge material from him. I don't know if he'd let you dig on a fee basis on his property or not but maybe he knows a neighbor who would as he has a ranch right in the flint deposits and probably knows all the other folks in the area.......Mel
Here's his info:
Gary Hardy 15887 Flint Ridge Road Newark, Ohio 43056 phone# 740-787-1578

Thanks, Mel. I found a website for Gary. He lists selct cabbing rough and select tumbling rough. Did you buy one or both of those? Do you have any pics you can share? Todd

Toad: There is a fee dig at 50 cents/pound Kay Nethers near the park. Also, there is Knapin this coming week end, so there will plenty of knappers there who could help you find material. There is road cut there somewhere that you can pick up some material, but not ever having been there that is all I can tell you. Woody

Toad, I've purchased multiple orders of both cabbing and tumbling material from Gary. Been very satisfied with all of it except, man it is tough on saw blades. That stuff is hard as can be. Gary will try to pick you out the kind of colors and sizes you prefer too. I'll try to post some pics for ya pretty soon and I also have a cab in progress...Mel

Thanks all. I've found Nethers farm, but am looking for contact info to see about hours. Might just drive down to see the museum and knap-in and try to drop in at the farm.

I've tried to buy some from a local rock shop in Cincinnati; he wanted $10/lb, which is too rich for my blood.
So, I guess I'm saying 50 cents/lb. doesn't seem too bad!

Toad, here are a couple of pics of some of Gary Hardys Flint Ridge material. Rough (dry) and tumbled: Actually much nicer in color than pictured as it's very bright outside now so it washes the color out a bit.....Mel

Toad, Hope you were able to make it down to the knap in and to Neathers Farm. The knap in was spectacular held at the Flint Ridge State Park, musta been 60 or more vendors selling everything from working equipment to rough for knapping ( the knappers prefer the less colorful flint for what they do leaving the colored variety for the lapidary folks...OK by me!!!)...this show was spectacular and the museum was open and quite helpful in directing where to dig. Most folks end up at Neathers who charges a $5 entry and .50 per pound but it is quite difficult to find in the back roads of Ohio farm country...we made it there and dug for about 4 hours...I let you know how the stuff looks after I cut some...sorry no pics on this trip...we made good friends with Kay during the dig...nice senior lady who supplements her farm with the digs...from what we saw she does OK!! I don't think they will be running out of good cutting flint any time soon...we saw on boulder in the pits that went about 3000# pounds but as much as we would have liked there was no way it would have fit into the Honda...LOL!! The Museum is well worth the visit...just chock full of answers on what, how , why and where flint was found and used!! Hope you made it down!!

Didn't make it down, 'cause I forgot the in-laws were in town. Still plan to go down this year, but would have liked to see the knap-in.
