I was sitting here thinking of all the ways I could defeat this pit polish monster problem.
I was wondering if I could drop a couple of problem pieces in a glass with fizzy denture cleaner.
Has anyone tried this or is this something that would do more damage than good?
Thanks All

So a regular burnish isn't doing it?
Have you tried a toothbrush and/or a high pressure spray?

LOL! I'm gonna try that tonight! Happens that I have dentures, so I already have the fizzies handy. Good idea, let's see if it works! I'll grab a couple of the soft beach rocks that have been in the vibe with chromium oxide for 2 full days now and are still dull and have green crap all over them, so it should be easy to find out. I'll let you know.

Hard Rock .... You are too funny!!!!! I am researching all alternatives!!
Okay .... maybe I have a few I would really like to save ....
Hey!!! You know me .... always a pain in the butt asking questions.
Made you answer didn't I? ;D
ps ... I have tried the toothbrush .... but no high pressure. Poor rock would go flying out of my hand and shatter somewhere. Then I would be really depressed!

Try a cheap ultra sonic jewelry cleaner.

Prevention - tumble the stones until there are no pits or cracks.
I know this will be difficult with stones that have variable hardness, but I've never had the problem with agate (except moss), jasper, chalcedony, rutilated quartz, garnet, corundum and etc...

In principal I agree with Toad, but with some rocks (like Lakers) there wouldn't be any rock left once you tumbled out all the pits and cracks. You could try a dry cleaning sprayer (recommended in various threads) or you can make a simple sprayer you can use in your laundry tub (or on a garden hose for even more pressure). I made one and it works fine. Look for "Make A Pressure Sprayer for Cleaning Rocks". tomaszewski.net/Kreigh/Minerals/Homemade.shtmlChuck

But sometimes it just takes a bit of patience. Instead of just one or two weeks in 60/90, maybe it will take five or six. I've had many stones ground away to nothing. But I guess it depends on what you're going for. If pits and cracks in a finished stone don't bother you, then you'll probably be dealing with polish problems. Seems there were a lot of good suggestions to deal with that.

As usual .... thanks guys!!! The more ideas the better.
As for making a high pressure sprayer, I would probably make it wrong, smack the crap out of the rocks and they would end up in the neighbors yard.
Actually ... that visual is kinda funny!
I am making a list of everything everybody is telling me/suggesting.
Thanks Again
