OK. For Julie's and my enlightenment, and for anyone else interested, the question Julie put forth was, essentially, were there any "other", perhaps off-the-wall, seldom discussed, out-of-the-box solutions to how to clean packed in grit/polish from the little pits that we end up with on so many of our stones. Julie suggested maybe denture cleaner - "fizz" them clean.
To wit, I'm now conducting an experiment for just that purpose. I pulled these 4 stones from a vibe batch that were running in chromium oxide (a nasty green polish), and had been boraxed. (I restarted the vibe, after borax, with AO polish.) So these are the "before" pictures. I hope they are usable. All pictures taken "dry".
First, a little black soft rock, probably not obsidian, Note the green polish in the pit in the bottom of the indentation:
Next, a piece of (I think maybe) snowflake obsidian. There is a fissure center left, packed with green polish:
Next a chunk of somethng resembling mariposite, or maybe some mixture of crysacolla and amazonite, or something along those lines. Yes, it's green, but there's a fissure in it, running lower left to upper right, containing packed-in green polish:
And finally, we have a piece of plain ol brown beach rock, where one tiny corner chipped off, and is now green with polish, and I can't get it off with terrycloth or brush:
I dropped all 4 of these into my denture cup with 2 (TWO) Polident 3-minute tablets. I'll leave them for at least 30 minutes, remove, rinse, dry, and repeat pictures, then report here the results.
