I am going to take most of the rocks and stones that I have finished in that past few months, that I have no idea what to do with, and make a mosaic of sorts.
I have oodles of air dry clay and lots of stones.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what would be fun or creative to make?
I may even (if it comes out half way decent) auction it off for the PIF fund.
As always ...

Build you a wood form and make a coffee table and two end tables.

Julie, I'd love to make a suggestion, but you've hit upon the singular, most glaring, lack of my talents in the area of arts & crafts ... no imagination at all! I can copy others' stuff, maybe even improvise a bit, but very little original designs ever come out of this fat head! Tom

Harry .... that would be great if I knew how to work with wood .... but maybe I will draw one anyway just to see what it would look like.
Tom .... you crack me up!!
Those of us that say we have no imagination usually end up surprising the crap out of ourselves and everyone else. ;D
Hmmmm .... I wonder .... do I feel a competition coming on?!!! Oh boy ...
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

Moondragon!!!
What a great idea!
You are taking something, someone would normally stick in a closet and make it something you want to display and show off.
One heck of a conversation piece!!!
Go For It!!! And take lots of pictures! If you need some pieces, I will be more than happy to send you a small package of my not so perfect ones to get started.
As always Julie

Too bad you couldn't make a mouse pad with stones. That would be soooo cool.

This is an idea using bigger pieces ... ps .... the piece in the middle I realized ... that is not polish embedded. That is the plume. Very Cool! So in this case ... I would not make the mosaic with this particular piece. Maybe placing clay pieces in between the stones and painting them different colors ... red, black, yellow, or white. The clay can be used to level up or down the individual pieces so that you have an unimpeded slide with the mouse.

Hey Julie, what about that lead solder stuff that stained glass workers use instead of clay?

I do /have done stained-leaded glass work, and if you are thinking about soldering the lead around the stones, I'm not sure that would be a good idea. Some stones might react badly to that much concentrated heat. Of course, it might also work well. I don't know for sure, but I'd be real cautious with that one..... Tom

Thank you Tom .... good point.
What if though ...... you heat up the rocks .... say .... put them in a bowl of hot water 4-5 minutes before using.
I do not mean screaming hot .... just hot enough so that the combination between hot and cold does not fracture the rocks.

Julie - if you have any left-overs of the same kind of stones you'll be using, you should first heat up your soldering iron, then just test it by holding the hot tip onto the left-overs for 10-15 seconds. If there's no effect, you got it made, go for it. The irons used for soldering stained glass lead molding get daggum hot. I have the scars to prove it! LOL! I don't remember the temperature, but it's hot! ;D

I love them, but modified with your rocks...mmmmmm...mmm.mmm! Go to; www.seventhavenue.com , and look up these item numbers - DH73975 DH53059 They are expensive in this book, but man, I can just see your pretties in one of these!!!!! Marie

Julie, if you do figure a way to make a mouse pad, I'm ordering one from you. I bet the clay inbetween the stones would work.
The lead sounds cool also, but where it is lead, do you need to be concerned about touching it often? I have never worked with lead so this is just a thought.
I checked out those style #s that DH53059 is beautiful.

Maybe use a cork backing? I dunno if that is thick enough. Are you close to a Micheal's or Hobby Lobby? When i am stumped about something I go in there an wander around for a few hours:)
