Well I'm finally getting around to posting the photos I took of the rock collecting we did in Utah last month on our trip. We stopped at 3 different places along the way. All three places came out of the book Rockhounding Utah. We had mixed results but overall we shipped back around 60 to 70 pounds from these three places.
The first was on Rt.24 just south of Rt.70 a few miles west of Green River. Pretty barren looking in one direction but nice scenery in the other.
The book had said that since this place was close to the highway and easily accessible it would be pretty picked over. They didn't lie although Amber found a few light blue pieces of agate. She has better eyes than me.
The main attraction here is conglomerate made up of agate and jasper pebbles. We found a couple of pieces.
The next spot was further south on Rt.24 about 10 miles west of Hanksville. It was in a much more picturesque here.
Amber scanning away again.
The collecting spot was on a hill top that was covered with rock, much of it agate, jasper and pet wood.
Here is what we collected from there.
Here are some cuts from the first two places.
That night we stayed in the town of Pangitch and next morning stopped at a spot a few miles south of town. This was by far the most prolific of the places we stopped. Collecting is along a dirt road heading into a place called Castro Canyon. Here is a picture of the road. Almost every rock is agate or jasper.
We did almost all our collecting within 50 feet of the car but I did have to take a little walk just to see what was further out.
We took about 50 pounds from here but I don't have an overall shot of them. We had to high grade here as we could easily have picked up a couple hundred pounds in an hour.
Here are a couple of cuts I've managed so far. We were really surprised at the variety of material here.
One final shot showing most of the boxes we mailed home. Most were gifts from the great RTHers that we met. Thank you all.
