I was drying out and separating my failed batch of soft beach rocks. I had a few chunks of amazonite in the batch, just to see what would happen. Here's one of the chunks. I was shocked when I first saw this flash. And it is a bright flash. It changes color, too, from pearly white to a sort of golden glow. I just thought it was neat, and maybe somebody else might like to see it. Thanks for looking, y'all! Tom

Boy, I should get in this section more often. I love beach rocks and that certainly is not a failed one in my opinion. I love flash so thanks for posting it.

Tom, it looks like you got into something magical! (Sara, is that what you meant?) LOL
Tom, I'll bet this looks so much better in person-- you should do your own video! LOL

The chunks of amazonite weren't part of the beach rocks - I had tossed them into the vibe with the beachies to see what the soft rocks would do to the amazonite. (The answer? Not much.) So, Jo, is this the "moonstone" part of the amazonite? Or is what I have more moonstone than amazonite? It's all so darn confusing!
Video - hmmm. No, I'm not nearly shake-free enough for that. For these pictures, I have a box that I stand on end, with a folded sheet of black construction paper on top, and I pose the stones on that. The camera is a Panasonic DMC-FS7S LUMIX 10.1 MP - I found it online for $139 and free shipping. Couldn't pass it up, especially since the old camera was dying.
Anyway, I put the camera on a tripod and aim it almost straight down - the tripod puts it about 6" from the piece I'm photographing. I then use macro mode and the 2-second timer to snap the photo. Then after downloading the image to my computer, I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager to manipulate it - crop it, resize it, etc. With this new camera, getting extreme closeups is no sweat.
It'll also do videos, but I shake too much to video my own hand holding a rock! LOL!

The texture looks more like apatite to me. It is a little softer than the amazonite. No matter what it is, it sure looks special! Fran

Sorry, just saw this again now. It doesn't look like the amazonite that I find, Tom, can't say that it is. I'd listen to Fran, she's no rock slouch. ;D

You guys all know infinitely more than I do about id'ing rocks. All I know is that it was in a bunch of rocks I ordered from the Rock Shed, and it was labelled "amazonite rough". I've tumbled a small batch of it without success, I've cabbed some of it with only moderate success, and I dropped a few chunks in the vibe with the beach rocks to see what that would do. So if Fran says it's apatite, then as far as I'm concerned, it is apatite. And thanks for the id, Fran. You know I really want to know about this stuff, and little by little, I'm learning from all "youse guys". Tom

Oh geez... well, the color is right for Amazonite. It is more clear, than what I typically find. If it changes color, and has the sheen... hey, I'm no expert by any means. I'm learnin'! Jo

Well, it is possible I could be wrong also. If it is an amazonite that has a great deal of tiny quartz crystals in it, it would give it that texture and appearance but apitite that I have gotten from the rock shed also looks a bit like that after it is tumbled for awhile. I just have not finished a batch since it is soft and crumbly most of the time so I have pulled it and set it aside till I get back to it. The true test is how hard it is and if it will take a shine at the end with the other stones. I am hoping it turns out great! Fran

If my wife were to see that, she would make me go out and get a whole batch of those for her! Absolutely beautiful!

I really like that. I would probably be acting like a fool thinking it had some gold in it
