Good Morning!
Today is barrel checking day and one of the batches is a 1 lb batch of Mahogany Obsidian, Apache Tears, and the addition of the small piece of Rainbow Obsidian I had set aside for the pre polish and polish of the obsidian batch.
I think that this batch is going to be very pretty. There are 2 issues that I have learned something from. Both issues are ones that have to do with the loss of more than what should be lost.
Instead of 7 days in 60/90 and 7 days in 120/200 (lost a bit more mass here), it should be 4-5 days each stage (maybe in both 60/90 & 120/220). The smoothing is awesome, but I did lose more mass than I thought.
I started this batch in pre-polish this morning and will check again next Saturday.
As always

The first time I tumbled Apache Tears I think I lost about half. It is volcanic glass so much softer than agates/jaspers. It depends on initial shape but it is safe to say more frequent checking is in order.

Thank you John
It really does make me feel better to know that the big kids (all of you experienced ones) did in fact experience the same thing. That I am making the normal, run of the mill errors.
As always ... that is why I love your input ...

This is good to know as I have a batch in the fine grit for a friend of mine (I've had these for over 2 years and never finished them, oops) so I will be taking mine out Monday with my rough grit batch. I know I have heard from other people in the past that you can essentially reuse some grit more than once. I think I may try that with my fine grit that currently has the apache tears in it for the batch that is running in the fine grind. It's at least worth a shot to see what comes out.

Well my Apache Tears are in 60/90 now. I dont think I have lost a lot so far. I looked at the batch yesterday and they needed a litte more in the 60/90. Well I will see how it gos.

What-a-ya-tink you're the only one who has ever done these things!!!
Anyone that says they have never had bad experiences or odd things happen in tumbling is full of it.
Something you might like to try is that when the obsidian is in 60/90 and looks "almost" finished,,,move it on to 120/220.In other words,,,skip the last run in 60/90.
You'll have to use your own discretion here but if the material isn't full of deep impressions, cracks, etc you may get away with it.
