Hi
Im looking to buy a new tumbler. I currently have a Lortone 3A, with extended shafts and 12V 60mm PC fan for motor cooling.
My machine works great, but is a bit undersized (2x 2lbs)
I'm thinking of buying a Lortone QT66 or QT12.
Lortone tumblers are the only ones i've found available here in Norway.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome
Chris

Welcome Chris! You might try www.therockshed.com. They have a wide selection of tumblers, including those made for European voltages. Their service is great and they ship internationally. As for the size you need, I guess it depends on how much rock you tumble. With either tumbler, you'll be able to feed your 3A a steady diet of rocks for polishing but the QT66 will work better if you don't have 10 lbs. of similar rough. Chuck

Greetings Chris, firstly welcome to RTH, i too was considering upgrading to a Lortone QT12, but went for the C300-12, all though the price just over 2X of the QT12 & it supports 2.72kg (6lb), 5.44kg (12lb), 9.07kg (20lb) & 18.14kg (40lb) barrels. Hi
Thanks for your replies.
So far i haven't got a separate barrel for polishing, i have 2 barrels,
barrel one is used for grit 80-220 barrel two is used for grit 400-600 + polish (tin oxide 99.9%)
Barrel two is cleaned out with crushed walnut shells (chunks not powder), water and soap, tumbling for a few hours.
Might be some extra work, but the rocks polish well.
Is having a dedicated polishing barrel worth the extra $100?
If i have to buy my new machine overseas, i'd like to get an extra barrel in the same shipment if one is needed, cos norwegians have to pay outrageous tolls and handling fees to bring import anything more valuable than $35 or £18.
thanks
Chris

Chris, the QT66 is the same frame as the QT12 so you can use either 2-6 lb. or 1-12 lb. barrel. I would want both if it was me. A lot of times you just don't have 12 lbs. I had a 40 lb. tumbler and ran a few buckets of rock through. Then the tumbler mostly just sat taking up space. If you had the QT66 you could use one of your 3 lb. barrels for a dedicated polish barrel. By culling the load each step the 6 lb. barrel should keep you supplied with good 3 lb. polish loads.

Like John said I would go with the QT66. You can always buy a 12 lb barrel if you have a couple larger rocks you want to tumble. In my experience two Lortone 6 lb barrels are more efficient than one 12 lb barrel. I think it's because of the narrow shape that forces more contact between the rocks. I base this on having to clean out 12 lb barrels every 3-4 weeks and 6 lb barrels every 2 weeks. All barrels run on the same tumbler at the same speed.

Greetings Chris, i have found a web link for Grenland Stein & Solv AS, if they do not list what you want, either email or phone & ask for the item you would like, they should be able to get any item that is listed within the Lortone Catalogue, however rarely they may refuse. Too true; in the UK it works like this: Goods + delivery = Customs Declaration Value, then the CDV valued above £200 attract Import Duty of 3.5%, then Vat at 15% on top. If i do not register the Import with Custom & Excise which is free, the goods may be seized, returned or & if ParcelForce gets them they may pay the duties & charge me an extra fee + transit costs from the point of Import to my address (which i may have already paid, depending on the Courier)! Extra Barrels if you are serious is a must especially if it is only for polish, for example see: My Ancient Rotary Tumbler Recipes! As John says which is also true, depending on where & how much rock you can source. -- I hail from (The Barony of Seabegs) Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, U.K, where aliens sometimes come for a visit & about 4 miles west from this monstrosity! Lortone is a good tumbler, I have the QT-6. (half of the one you're getting) lol .... I use it for the coarse stage, then move on to the UV-10 vibe.
