Christa and I took Friday off and headed for the White Mountains. First trip we've had out in quite a while (what with the remodel project), and first hounding trip I've done since last March with the kids. All work and no play makes beef a dull boy! ;D
We headed east and hit the little rock shop in Globe (of course). I found some things there I couldn't live without (of course) which I'll take pics of soon (maybe) lol. We ventured on and passed through the Salt River Canyon
And before we knew it, some several hours later, found ourselves in the middle of nowhere east of Springerville
Looked like a good place to set up camp. Did I mention there was agate everywhere?
Oh yeah. This is in the same agate field as Luna New Mexico (Luna Blue), though several miles away from where we usually go in the area. The agate here is pretty wild, pock marked with rhombohedron shaped molds, possibly from long ago dissolved calcite crystals. Nice banded pieces, along with quartz crystals just litter the forest floor.
Here's our camp site
Some views
We camped, hounded, grilled, relaxed, hounded some more. Oh man it was much needed! Sunday morning we broke camp and headed for Snowflake. We hit many spots between there and Holbrook. Here's a pic out there with a storm rolling in
And from near Woodruff where the idjits are whittlin' away the Butte
One more pic driving home on I-40 east of Flagstaff
So, we picked up a few rocks along the way. Here's a long overdue tailgate shot
Some of the agate we collected
And some of the pet wood we found
Some jaspers we picked up along the way
And a super cool chunk of AZ palm I found out there. I'd hate to say palm is 'rare' for the state, but indeed it's not nearly as common as other fossil wood found here. This find really made my day!
Man it was a heck of a lot of driving there and back, but wow what a wonderful trip it was! Thanks for sharing it with us ;D
