A lot of you know I've been struggling all summer to learn how to "do" rocks, and that I have yet to find a way to get a good, "liquid" shine on them. Well, guess what - I done it! I'm totally thrilled, although I have no idea what I'll do with these besides just stare at them. These have quite a saga behind them. I first started them July 7 - a mix of green moss and carnelian, all from the Rock Shed. They had 2 8-day runs in 60/90. Then I weeded out some bad ones, and didn't like how they were smoothing, so I started over with 46/70 on 7/21. Ran 8 days in that, then back to the 60/90. On 8/4, I boraxed, then started in 120/220 grit after adding plastic beads. That worked well, so on 8/10, I burnished and started in 220 graded. On 8/18, burnished and started with 500 AO. 8/24, burnish, go to AO 1000 "pre-polish". 8/30, burnished and did some Super Cerium polish because they weren't as shiney as I thought they should be. Then today - VOILA! After burnishing and drying and removing the plastic and ceramics, here's what I ended up with. Without flash, just overhead light With flash Tried some see-through shots, not very good at night, but whatever... They still aren't up to the magnificent gleam a lot of y'all get, but for me, they are GrrrrrreeeEEAAATTE! I started these back before I had a clue - if I had known then, I would have cut a lot of them into preforms. Thanks for looking, as always Tom

Ooops - in my excitement, I forgot to give a heartfelt "THANK YOU!" to everybody here who has offered advice and encouragement - would never have been able to get this far without y'all. Thanks!

Very nice there Tom. I really like the green moss looking one! I can't wait till my wife and I go on our anniverssary trip in a few weeks. We'll be down by Pom de Terre Lake in southern Mo, with any luck my pickup truck will be full of nice specimens for me to start working on!

Tom:
I've been working on some Carnelians agate nodules from the Rock Shed for several months now, and they are getting close to being perfect. I simply keep them in my rotary (60/90 SC) and grind away as other material cycles through much faster.
If you persevere and grind off the remaining pits and blemishes, you will be amazed at the end product. It's like they are battery operated. They have a warm glow from within.
Run them a little longer in 60/90 then polish. You will amaze yourself. Time and patience is all that separates you from the pros on RTH.
Darryl.

"Time and patience ...."
Right. Time, I got plenty of. Patience, not so much! ;D
About 1/3 of this batch, I plan to trim up a bit on the WF, and start over. I still have some rough, which I'll try to cut some preforms out of, and I'll combine the lot with a brand new batch. I'll give this batch about 2 months in coarse grits and then finish in the vibe with a ton of ceramic filler. (There goes that patience thing again! LOL!)

It is a great batch Tom! The moss is a very difficult one to do in the tumbler. It will chip or undercut when you least expect it to when it grinds down to a soft spot. It is so beautiful, it is worth the trouble though and that one you held up sure looks nice! The carnelian is so hard, it takes forever to get them smooth. I am afraid I ran mine for at least 8 weeks in rough. My next batch, I will take to the saw first and shave off some of the trouble areas ahead of time so it won't take so much time. Looks like you have a very nice shine too! Fran
