I have at last found my first Agate. It was in the dry sand on the beach in front of Turnberry Golf Course. This was where the British Open Golf Championship was held in July this year.
It is just a wee Agate with a seam running through Quarts, but i dont care it's my first find. ;D

Darn nice little agates too. Lots of good colours in there. Those will polish up nice. I would like to look around there myself.

Oh I am so jealous, it's a beauty! We are going to our caravan in Norfolk at the begining of October so I will be hunting on the beach there!

I have found a few more small Agates further up the coast from my first find. They are on the small size (approx 1 inch) but when cut in half they show some nice rings. Now i have the bug. :help:

Mary, I think that the exterior depends very much on the type of agate. Volcanic agates look very different on the outside than sedimentary agates. There is also a lot of variability within a type.
Sorry, I'm not much help.

Hi Mary, I have had the same problem One friend said if its got Pock marks on the outside its a good chance it will be a agate , I found these Great I thought a Plume Agate !!!! I took it to the museam and the geologist said sorry just flint I should have known 1 - smooth skin 2 calcium crust But if its been sea washed for some millions of years ? There are a few along the NE coast of Yorkshire but its just luck if you find one I got acouple in Scotland while on holiday & seeing Celt40 I will try and get a photo of them to show you Jack Yorkshire UK
