Hey everybody, my name is Mark and I am brand new to the hobby of rock tumbling. I bought a vibratory tumbler several months ago and use it to polish gold jump rings for making bracelets. It seemed somewhat of a waste to have the tumbler sit around for weeks on end without being used. So it seemed the only logical thing to do was use it for polishing rocks.
I am having a difficult time identifying some rock specimens I have obtained. I bought the Audubon Society Field Guide and the pictures in there are not really much help. They all seem to be of museum quality pieces. So I’m asking for your patience here when I submit a picture of something I can’t identify.
I live in Virginia but do an extensive amount of travelling around the country. Right now I am in South Dakota and have found some interesting looking rocks. I’ll get some pictures and post them so you guys (and gals) can help me identify them.

welcome aboard! These folks here are very very patient when it comes to someone needing ID on a rock, or anything else for that matter. Bunch of very nice people you'll find here. Lots and lots of knowledge here!!

Yep, just post your pics in the rock ID section and there will be plenty of people glad to help.

I live in Newport New, not too far from you. I'm not originally from this area. My family and I have only been here for about two years.

Not too many people are, I got stationed here in 1982 and never left. Vibe tumblers are great, I have a Thumblers UV-10 vibe, it's my favorite one.

Welcome to the forum enjoy and learn. Just fill your pockets with rocks and load up the luggage.

Well I guess I'm off on the right foot because I was up in the Black Hills, South Dakota today and I ran out of pocket room. Scary considering I was wearing shorts with cargo pockets. Not to mention I have to get these back to Virginia. I don't think the Post Office is going to be best pleased with me when I come in with flat rate boxes full of rock.
