Bought this thing on impulse now im wondering how to get it to work. its a vintage aquarium pump. I think the piston will detach with out trouble. 1/100hp 1500 something rpm. 120 v. Easiest would be vertical mount and would keep water out of motor better. i don't know. does it look usable? I dont know anything about motors. is it fast enough? any advise from experienced tinkerers would be greatly appreciated.

1/100th hp is kind of a lightweight.
You could make a flat lap for the finer grits.
Or you could use it for a bubbler/spitter to put water on your cabbers wheels.
P.S. Those are still made.

Yes, as Joe said use it for the air pump it was designed for. 1/100th hp won't run much. The most common hp motor on lapidary equipment is 1/3hp.

Looks like a great motor for a tumbler! I think mine's a 1/75 HP on my Thumbler.

That's what I was thinking Nate: a small tumbler.

this thing is kinda small but its whisper quiet. i dont know. still thinking if I can use it for small stones. i ran it for about 2 minutes and its already getting hot. is this normal? does that mean it needs to be taken apart and cleaned or something? May end up offering it to the ebay gods.

It should not get untouchable, warm after 30 and stabilizes there.
Motor bearing may need a clean & lube. Disconnect the motor from the pump and the motor should be very free (pump could be loading the motor down), if not, spay a good penetrating oil (not WD40) in both ends of the motor shaft and spin it for a minute. Wipe off and residual gunk and oil with a 40 weight oil or sewing machine oil. Run for 5 minutes and re-oil. If it still over-heats it needs to be taken apart and properly cleaned & lubed.
What was the initial cost?

thank you drjo, thats good to here that it should stabilize. it didnt get that hot. ill let it run longer later today. the copper winding inside looks dirty so ill try to clean it. how long should I be able to run a little thing like this? the cost was 35 + sh i believe. i know thats kinda high but like i said i dont know my motors. I got it because it has the mount , and is neat as hell.

correct me if I am wrong here. 1 hp is 550 pounds per square inch or something? is that the torque? so 1% of that (1/100hp)would be 5.5 pounds? is that how hard I can grind before it stops the little guy? The surface of the cab that contacts will be a small fraction of 1 square inch even. I hot glued a piece of sand paper on just for a quick test . well i melts a piece of copal amber instantly, oopsy.. I tried chalcedony too and it works fine. I might be able to stop it before the dop wax gives but I dont htink I need to press that hard. any way its a nice little toy. The problem im gonna have is I dont have a saw to rough out stones before.
