I got back home late last night at 11:30 from a collecting trip to Davis Creek with a fellow rockhound. While I was carrying my buckets of Obsidian (downhill, if you can believe that!!) to my vehicle he unearthed this one. After looking it over he wasn't particularly keen on keeping it so he gave it to me!! I really appreciate his generosity!! It just barely fit into a 5 gallon bucket so we could carry it to my vehicle. My guess is that it weighs between 90 and 100 lbs. After I rest up some today I will wash it off to see its true beauty. Holy cow that's a big chunk of obsidian! Are you planning to clean it up and use it as-is for display, or cut it up and slab it or use it for knapping?

Tom, For now it will probably be a decoration in the yard in front of my shop. I don't knap so it is safe from that fate but it is not safe from making a sphere or two out of it. Bob

It's big, but can't tell on the beauty yet. Needs a bath :-)

Here's an idea - make a sphere exactly 8.59 inches in diameter, and call it a bowling ball! I think it might come out a little more than the regulation max of 16 lbs, though ...... ;D

Cool... it's like a giant monolith to a chipmunk. Nice snag, good to have a buddy like that.

I got it washed up and the top looks like this. The sides are nearly perpendicular to the color bands so I can't see into the other color layers. It is too big to fit into my saw so it will remain as is for now. Here is another smaller piece. It has some stunning colors and it WILL fit into my saw! This piece was waiting in the road right beside my vehicle. Though it doesn't have any color bands it has a real interesting pattern on its bands. This type of banding is rather uncommon for this site. It will make some interesting cabs, though. Bob

Can't wait to see what they look like after they have been introduced to your saw, Bobby. Wish something like that would wash up on the beach for me!

Shan, Let me know when you are going and I see if I can arrange to meet you there. Arranging my opportunity means convincing my wife that I need more of this stuff. Not an easy task nor a popular idea with her. Bob

Very nice haul. Looks to have some great colors in it. If I say, lets go look rocks, Donna says when. If she says lets go, I say, I'm ready. She was checking the temps to go look geodes up near Keokuk, Iowa this morning. We are ready to go somewhere. It's nice to both like rocks.
