Here are the errors that I now know to avoid: (1) start with a smaller center stone (2) make really really sure the mating surfaces are FLAT! (3) only glue 2 sides at a time, then allow to set good (4) use stone that are about equal MOH's hardness So, with that in mind, here is my very first attempt at an intarsia. Size is 2-5/8" tall by 1-7/8" wide. Stones are obsidian, sodalite, and the center is something resembling coprolite: Thanks for looking! I promise to do a better job on the next one. Tom

Tom, That's nothing to be ashamed about! The biggest battle is actually sitting down to attempt one...and you conquered that 1st step. I like your use of stones as well. Keep it up...your doing excellent! Steve

You know Tom, these don't look easy, and you seemed to pull it off without a hitch. I can see some eye poppers coming from you in the near future!

You are off to a great start! I can't imagine I'd do anywhere near as good as this on my first try.

Not having done any of these yet (and I don't think I have the capacity to do this) I think your lousy first attempt has one hell of an excellent end result! I think it looks fabulous and that you did an outstanding job.
Flats are super hard to do on any surface, never mind on a mix of materials -
I applaud your great job!

Tom:
Wow I think that was a beautiful first attempt. The use of stones is what always appeals to me and that was a great color combination and a beautiful cab! I know how hard it is to do and this is a beauty! Amber

Thanks for the nice words, folks.
Garry (mossyrockhound) sent me a wonderful tutorial on how to make an intarsia, and that's what I tried to follow. I think it turned out ok, considering how much I learned in the process. And thanks to Garry - it's great tut!

It's a sign of things to come! Keeping edges square is not for the faint of heart. Great first attempt.

I'd say its very good for your first attempt. The point is that you made one, they will get better and better. Looking forward to seeing how you progress so I hope you keep posting more of them. Intarsia is something I'd like to do one day so its also very helpful to see the process through other peoples work. Go on make another ;D
