Welcome.
Depends on what the river rocks are made of. You'll probably need to start with a rotary tumbler. Lortone and Thumler both seem to have good followings here. You can complete your rocks by doing all stages in your rotary. Eventually you might want to spring for a vibe to speed things up.

As I've been accumulating the various pieces of equipment over the past several months since I became addicted, I've ended up with both Lortone and Thumler's rotary tumblers. IMHO, I would start with a Lortone - the lid and seal are MUCH easier to work with than the Thumlers. A good choice, I would think, would be the Lortone 33B - it comes with, and rotates, 2 of the 3-lb barrels. I'd also get at least one extra barrel to keep separate for use only with the final polish stage. They are available from many places - eBay, the Rock Shed, etc.
Of course, once you get addicted, it's only a small step from simply tumbling rocks, to making cabochons. This progression provides you with a great opportunity to spend a lot more of that money that you just can't figure out what else to spend it on. ;D ;D ;D
