I was recently gifted a couple Lortone model 3a's..... ;D.... I was test running them today and after a couple of hours they were both pretty warm..... not too hot to touch or anything, but pretty warm ... Is that normal?

Yes, sometimes they do feel too hot to touch.

Yes, motors get very warm, too hot too touch if air temp is high. I think the instructions mention this and say not to worry about it. Bob

Yes, they can get warm. After a warm day they are nice and toasty. Make sure you leave a little space around them so they can dissipate heat if it's warm. Steve

Yep mine runs hot in the summer but run warm in the winter. (I live in Michigan and run it in my garage all winter long).

I never ran mine in the winter, but it sure is a goo hand-warmer in the fall and early spring.

It gets very warm. I have been thinking about using it to heat dop in a metal cup. Does anyone think that would be a good idea?

Well O.K. then, Thanks everyone... all seems well then..... I'll give them a test run overnight, just to make sure..... Also, I just noticed a burning rubber smell ( I'm not that suprised really ). Is that also normal? (Yes, I'm a little paranoid )

"Also, I just noticed a burning rubber smell ( I'm not that suprised really ). Is that also normal? (Yes, I'm a little paranoid )" Not unless you see flames too. Don't overload the barrels & check to see if the belt is slipping @ the motor pulley. And p/u some extra belts to have on hand as they break at the most inconvenient times. Dr Joe .

Chris,
If you are test running without barrels or empty barrels then it will run hotter then if it had a normal load.

Chris, I am so glad you are getting back to tumbling! All of my lortones run pretty hot. I have removed the plate on each that covers the motor. Seems to have helped a great deal with making the belts last longer too. When I stop them and clean them up every month or so, I clean thoroughly, add the oil to each end of the tumbling rods after cleaning out their holders with a q tip. Seems to keep them going well. If I feel the motor is dusty, I let them cool completely and then use canned air to blow them out. Hope that helps. Fran

Good Afternoon All!
My Lortone 33B runs 24/7. I have not had any problems with it and it runs high warm to hot all the time.
Always make sure that there is ample air flow. If not, you could over heat it and then you may have problems.
Julie
