I've been running my "Berry's Blue" vibe (made by Covington) since the day I got it in mid-June. Today, I stopped it to rinse and recharge, and it wouldn't start up again. The motor turns very easily by hand, but when turned on, it just hums. I've emailed the person from whom I bought it, but I doubt I'll get any relief. So - I was looking through Rock Shed, and he now has a UV-3. It has the same motor and frame as the case-cleaner version of the UV-10, but a smaller bowl made for rocks. It sounds like just my speed - I don't want to have to wait until I have a bucket full of stuff before I can start a batch. Anybody have one of these yet, and what do you think about it? Thanks, Tom

I can only speak for the UV-10, it's my favorite tumbler!

The UV-10 INDUSTRIAL is bullet proof. Make sure 3 lb. is equivalent as "Industrial". The casing cleaning models of UV10 are not rock tumblers.

Try loosening the nut or nuts holding your motor on or on the bottom where the counterweight is, sometimes they vibrate themselves tighter and make the motor so it won't start. I have had this problem on a couple of vibes that I picked up to refurbish, that usually fixes them. If that is it, you can locktite them so they dont vibrate tighter anymore.

Give the motor a spin with the power on (being careful not to get yourself wrapped up in it ) an see if it starts. Some motors have staring capacitors (about the size of a roll of quarters, you can replace these) and some have start windings (built internally. you can't replace these). Dr Joe .

Thanks for the suggestions, folks! However .....
Tony, "been there, done that" ... At first I though maybe the fan had sucked in something that wrapped around an wedged the shaft to stop it from turning. So I completely dismantled it, and that was not the problem. The motor spins freely when you twirl the shaft by hand, but when turned on, it just hums.
Dr. Jo, "been there, done that" - it goes about 1/4 turn, then stops and hums. With power off, it spins like a top with very little friction - power on stops it.
I'm sure the windings or the brushes in the motor are shot.

Tom i check the motor on my 20" Fulmer, found the same on this site / www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/3M569 Though the Fulmer lap has the original motor. It is a 1968........... I know were speaking of two different animals.
