Crystal habit doesn't look right for pyrite though. Is it some kind of schorl. Maybe casstierite?

Yep, California Tourmaline I have a half of five gallon bucket of the stuff somewhere. Funny it is mixed in with quartz just like that in the background of your photo. It takes a wonderful polish but brakes apart easily.

Schorl is (generally) junk black massive tourmaline. Some is gemmy enough to cab. The dark green looks like nice quality in pictures.
