Looks more like quartz - don't see the typical purple color here (except maybe a little in the bottom right of the first pic). Ineresting specimen though.

The word "Amethyst" as it applies to quartz can be somewhat of a misnomer...in reality, it can describe both the color of a purple quartz specimen, and a specific gemstone. The purple color comes from iron and aluminium impurities in the quartz. The color can however be changed by heating the specimen, thats how they make green amethyst and even citrine sometimes. The minerals are basically identical, except for the color. So in a manner of speaking, "amethyst" can in fact be several different colors, although it is generally meant to describe the purple variety. From the photos, I'd almost want to label it smokey quartz....again a bit of a misnomer... Same as amethyst, iron and aluminium give it its color....

there is more purple in person. I coulnt bring it out in photoshop. I am using a GE REVEAL 100 cfl bulb, which seems to change things a little. even changing the white balance on the cameras doesnt give me quite the color i wanted.
