Today I met up with a rock buddy for some collecting. I was on a mission to find jasper for the tumbler. Got to keep the kids (aka tumblers) fed. After studying google earth I figured on going to a beach along a river in a town I grew up in. There was lots of nice jasper and chert. It was a very peaceful place, just the opposite from the summertime months when it's full of swimmers, canoers, and sunbathers. I only had to search for about 45 minutes before my backpack was full. By the time I got back to the car my arms were full of rocks too! My rock friend also found some nice rocks with crystal pockets and interesting patterns. Here's what I found. Steve Pile of jasper. Some closeups: Interesting chunk of chert:

Awesome finds Steve. Looks like some very nice quality tumbles will come out of that stuff. All I found at the beach on Lake Michigan this summer was zebra mussles, and beach tumbled coals (left overs from beach fires I'm guessing).

Steve: Your finds look very much like the material found on Stoney Creek up by Black Butte reservoir, which is near Chico. When the water is down in the fall Stoney Creek is a great place to find jasp-agate in many colour combinations. That said, your finds look pretty good. Post the resulting tumbles for us. Woody

That brecciated jasper (#3) looks like it's going to be sweet.

Nice finds Steve. Are these found at Goat Rock Beach? It's funny because I drive past that place almost every week now. Haven't stopped in there yet but will hunt there one of these days.

Yeah I like that yellow brecciated one. Tony, those were from Healdsburg more towards the upper end of the Russian River, not Goat Rock which is where the mouth is. It's the same jasper though. Very colorful stuff. I'm surprised you haven't stopped by Goat Rock! Remember, if you park at the rock, it's the smaller beach to the south. Part way down the beach you will find a patch of pebbles with lots of jasper and chert. I'd stay away now due to the surf conditions being so high, but I am sure you are aware of that. Steve
