I've seen reference to the Woodward Ranch, WWR, on several threads. Can't seem to find detailed info on the internet. I also can't find any threads about previous RTH trips there. So tell me all about it or link me up! Thanks. Later, jeri

Jeri: Woodward Ranch is on Calamity Creek Road about 15 miles south of Alpine, TX on Texas hwy 118. They have a website www.woodwardranch.net that has more information. Think they've gotten a lot more expensive since last I was there something like $2 per pound for what you keep plus camping fees, if you camp, but the agate types you can find are very valuable so it's definitely worth a trip. Beautiful scenery too plus there's sometimes the opportunity for side trips to places like Needle Peak south of there. I've been several times and have always found something new and remarkable with a little effort.....Mel

Thanks for the info Mel... Looked over their website... Says they have 60 different kinds of 'rocks'... Doesn't have pics of them except for the red plume agate.

Jeri: Thing about Woodward is you never know what kind of wonderful agate will show up. I've personally found plume in red, black , greenish rose and gold, moss in all colors, orbicular and peanut agate, flower garden agate, fortification agate to rival some of that from Mexico, sagenite, geodes with clear quartz or amethyst, good carnelian, blue and purple agate and many types that combine several of these features. On a Woodward side trip to Marfa we found lots of bouquet plume, black plume and nice black and whited banded agate and at Needle Peak green moss, gold moss, some green plume and some pom pom agate. Woodward's main ranch is my favorite though as there is just so much good agate to be found there. Here's some pics of some of my plume agate examples. Most these are from Woodward and a couple from Marfa...Mel

Thanks for the list and visuals! That helps a lot. Maybe I can swing a trip out there next summer. Since I don't camp and the cabins are probably out of my price range, I'd probably stay at a cheap hotel in Alpine. Anyone else got pics from WWR? Later, jeri

Thanks for the pics! I'm really excited that I may make it to the next Blitz. Can I borrow your pic of the non-rock? I know another group that never travels without duct tape or WD40. Later, jeri

Later, jeri Oh, by all means. Feel free to use that picture. Duct tape, WD-40 and some Bailing Wire. That will take care of all your traveling ailments. Condor

Well not exactly, but we almost did. It was Jamie (Desert Dweller, Ed (Stoner) and I heading to WWR Blitz I in the now famous Green Burrito (that's another story). Just outside of El Paso, the front end of the truck was beginning to shake. I'm getting a little concerned, Stoner says we'll be okay then POW! we get a blowout. Luckily I did have a good spare tire. The blown tire was in shreads that were quite sharp so in order to be able to put it back in the Explorer we ended up Duct taping it. What was really cool about all this is that all three of us had just known each other for about an hour. Ed and Jamie a little be longer because they met on the plane from Phoenix to El Paso. By the time we fixed the flat, we were already good friends. By the time we got to the Blitz, it was like we had known each other for years. BTW... Folks, if you ever get the chance when driving through Van Horn, Texas be sure to stop by and have some of the Diesel Fried Chicken that Stoner showed you a picture of. It is to die for. Condor
