My kids are off the whole week of Thabnksgiving and we're trying to plan an outing not too far from our home near Destin, FL. I looked up the Hogg mine on Google but there wasno current information on the site. Anyone been there lately? Is it even open that time of the year?
I understand therre may be some interestying prospects in the Stone mountain area as well. Schorl tourmaline, I think- anyone been there who can give me detils? I have family in McDonough and might head up tat way some time soon.
Thanks all,
Mark H.

Went to the Hogg about a month ago. There is plenty rose quartz to be found. They usually have the digs on the first Sat. of each month. Now the down side! I think they are a little pricey at $35 per person for a fee dig. But, that is just my opinion! Good luck.

Mark, another alternative would be Ruck's pit, Fort Drum, Fla. for calcified clam shells. Way more valuable than rose quartz. Eddie Ruck owns the mine and is at Graves Mtn., Ga at the spring and fall open houses selling them. Yhe pit is closed, but there are lots of dump piles to go through and you can find them. Rodney Moore that owns Hogg mine has an article in Dec. Rocks and Gems on agates. Very good article. You can find articles on both mines at www.magmarocks.com and go to the 'past field trip reports'. Both owners are members of M.A.G.M.A. and there is a sanctioned dig most every weekend. Thanksgiving dig will be Sat. the 28th at the Crabtree emerald mine in Spruce Pine, NC Hope this helps, Ken

John- just the site I needed. Ken, I have seen the Ruck's Pit clam shells- and they are really special. buyt, the distance is just too far ( >350 miles) to make it a day trip. We can do the Hogg mine, though. Ruck's pit and the Vulcan materials site in central florida (fossils) are on the agenda, though. I saw a thread about Baton Rouge area agates that piqued my interest, too.
