No Benite isn't some new stone, its my young cabbing friend Ben. He dosen't have the ability to post pictures here so he asked me to do it. Ben, who is 11, and his father came down to my shop to play with rocks on Saturday. Ben has his own grinder at home but likes to come down and use my machine from time to time. We spent the previous Sunday looking at cabs in jewelry stores in a local artsy town so had lots of inspiration. I'm not sure if he wanted a refresher lesson, to use my bigger machine or root through the 100's of preforms I have lying around. Either way we had a fun day and he produced some very nice looking cabs. He has certainly picked up some serious skills in a short amount of time. Here Ben is at my grinder. Here are his cabs. First up obsidian. Unakite, he did this one on his machine. Tahoma from Mossyrockhound. Blue banded agate. I think he did this one on his machine. Sodalite. Unknown. He found this preform in my shop and wanted to make it for his mom, one of my best friends. It was her birthday on Saturday. I gave him one of my sterling bails for it. Amethyst. He wanted this one because its his birthstone. Same backlit. We couldn't let his dad get away without doing some rock work so he got a saw lesson. He cut up several rocks but this one was special. Ben found it in a local stream when I took them hounding earlier this year. There is documented jasper that is found in this stream but I've never seen anything this red or patterned. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with this.

Man Ben! You are making cabs much better than I do! I love that sodalite. Looks like you can fall right into the clouds in it and the blue lace is beautiful! Obsidian is not easy to do either and you have an excellent shine there! I will only give one hint of advice. Safety glasses. In your picture, you don't have them on and chips can fly faster than you can knock them away or blink. You are really doing a grea job and Tony, you are an excellent friend! Fran

Ah Ben, you've never seen inside my box of tricks. I don't let anyone see in there. lol Just kidding. That is the container where I keep my superglue. My basement is humid and this causes the glue to harden before I can use it all. I put it in the diaper wipe box along with some packets (anti-desicant) that remove the moisture in the air. This makes it last longer. That box has now been performing its service for almost 9 years now.
