:help: Someone has given me several pounds of tumbling grit and polish in unmarked bags. I am wondering if my logic on what grits they are correct. I know what coarse is because I have some already marked. Should the grain of the grits get smaller as the grit size get goes up (90, 180, 400, 1000, etc) I have five lbs of a grit that is like powder and is dark grey in color. I have tripoli, and I am assuming that the white powder is cerium oxide. Just wondering how to guess the others that are grainy. Thanks for any information.

Without seeing the studd, it sounds like you are guessing right. The grit is finer the larger the number.

Dark gray powder is probably 500 grit silicon carbide, 1000 grit AlOx will be a light gray, the white powder more likely will be Aluminum Oxide - Cerium oxide is usually at least "cream" and more often "peach" to fully orange colored, Chrome oxide is green and Tin oxide is sort of a very light gray/off-white.
