Try, try again. Here are two photos from my first attempt at a table display at the Irishtown Christmas Craft Sale. These are my necklace ready pendants. Some tumbles, some performs. Each is tagged with an ID, discovery location and some geologic trivia. This was my proud launch of Fundy Rocks after close to a year my with RTH mentors. Irishtown Christmas Craft SaleIrishtown Christmas Craft SaleSo … I suck! Sold four. After table rental and lunch, we were in the hole about $8. Here’s the try, try again part. At my second City Hall Christmas Craft Sale, I sold over 50 pendants and earring sets. I donated 50% of proceeds to the United Way (local charity organization) and will invest my 50% towards a Gryphon Twist Grinder to make better pendants. My tile saw will love me for that. It is currently my edge grinder. Ouch! I really encouraged to create more and create better. Thanks RTH. I never expected to be doing this when I signed up. Darryl.

Congratulations! It seems to me that each show is just going to be different. I think it looks really nice and the information is great for folks! I really like your wood display that is holding a few things. It looks neat. Having the rough rocks there adds quite a bit to it and Your black holder is nice and organized and now you just need a couple more of them because with the rate you are going, you will be filing them up! Awesome Darryl! Did you do anything different between the first and the second shows, or do you thing that it was circumstances turning in your favor and the fact that your stones are incredibly beautiful?

Hermey - The "crowd" makes a huge difference. With only two displays to date, I have learned a few things.
The rough rock specimens of the finished material really gathers interest and makes people appreciate the work involved. Without that, many see it as glueing pebbles or driveway gravel on a ring. I added tumbler photos and a desciption of the process and time involved. It gets people talking and makes them realize that the art (if you can call it that) is not something that anyone can do.
The ID card, discovery location, and geolgic trivia also raised a lot of interest. This especially works when the material is from a location that the buyer has heard of, if it happens to be local material. In terms of geologic trivia, the Legend of the Apache Teardrop held a special meaning with our own native people. Every tag has a tidbit of information specific to the piece. I'll post a photo if there's interest.
One final surprise, if I had more silver, I would have sold more. I went in with about a 80/20 gold/silver ratio of pendant findings. The "yound crowd" is all wearing silver, and I had many requests for silver, or to remount a piece.
Darryl.

Congrats! your displays look great and you obviously put a lot of work into everything. It helps to have great material from my favorite bay. I have been selling a few pendants myself but haven't done a "show" yet. What you have learned will help me. I totally get the same reaction sometimes about the "gluing pebbles to rings" thing. Most don't appreciate the work involved.

Darryl, My wife and I do outdoor markets in the summer and some indoor bazaars in the winter and I can tell you from several years of experience--some days are diamonds and some days are rocks--and that has nothing to do with tumbling or anything else that can be supported with any logic! I believe we have done well over 50 shows and I long since given up even attempting to predict what the customers want and are willing to buy. Ya just pays your money and ya takes your chances. Darryl:
We have done shows with sales ranging from $300-$60! Some days youa re just disappointed. I think the dispaly is really nice, and I agree that having the rocks there generates interest. There are a lot of plastic bead people at shows, and people look at our cabs, and are like well I can buy them at Michael's, the local craft store, for $2.00. They have no appreciation of the work involved. We are working on getting into juried shows, though that brings a higher cost for the table, etc! Don't be hard on yourself!!!! Your display is awesome, I would like to see the cards on the pendants! Amber

That is great! Selling that many pendants you know people like what you are doing. Your display looks very good to. Keep up the good work.
