Do you think Thumler's barrels (the 3 pound barrel in particular) are dishwasher safe? If so, do you think that'd be a reliable way of making sure I have all the grits and stuff out of the barrel? I would of course clean it out by hand before hand, then put it in with a normal load of dishes just as extra insurance.

No!
As a male, I am guilty of putting almost anything in the dishwasher from greasy parts to tennis shoes, but would never run a rubber barrel through. The detergents are just too harsh and the temperature just too high. It will look clean any shiny the first few times before the rubber starts to disintegrate.

Although the barrels look pretty sturdy they seem to be sensitive to chemicals and lubricants. I would scrub them with a toothbrush and give them a thorough rinsing. If they look clean and feel clean then they are clean enough for me.

Definitely no dishwasher. If you run the grit 7-10 days it should be well broken down and a good rinse should suffice. Before polishing a burnish with either Borax or Tide will clean both the drum and the rocks. You would have more trouble with grit in crevices in rock that was advanced too soon.

If you have one and it's not too cold outside, I like to use my little power washer on the rocks and barrel. Nothing says clean like 2000 psi.

I use regular dish washing hand soap and a good stiff brush and warm water.
