Hi y'all, I was wondering if anyone knows how to color rocks with dye ? I have seen rocks in all colors that are not natural for the type of rocks they are...so, how does someone such as myself (mentally challenged) (ok..so I am retarded) ha ha ha !!!! how do you dye rocks ? thanks Steve let me add that I have tried RIT dye and denatured alcohol..with absolutely no luck what so ever on soaking them.

The colours of dyed rock are quite fugitive, and usually garish to boot. Much better results can be had with inorganic metallic salts, which is what gives most rock colour naturally. The downside to colouring rock is the expense of the metallic salts with the exception of the iron salts. A very good albeit small book on the subject is Gemstone & Chemicals How to Create Color and Inclusions by George W. Fischer. You should be able to find this book at the library.
Dan, deb193redux recently posted information on colouring agate with sugar, and acid. Search for Tuxedo agate under cabs, and you will find it. He also has information put together that he offered in a pdf format about colouring agate. Woody

In his book "Gemstone and Mineral Data Book", chap 6, John Sinkankas gives considerable detail on the treatment of a number of gemstones in various ways, i.e. dyeing, heat and others. See if you can locate a copy of it to look at. If not contact me via e-mail at : jbrenan@verizon.net Good luck Jim
