Howdy folks, Well, I'm still cutting stuff for my presentation on local rocks. Hard to get excited about Texas Hill country stuff as most the stuff in this limestone country is various tones gray and brown but then I'll pretty much hunt whatever is available *L*. Anyway, just a couple of pics. Pedernales chert: This was colorful on the outside with lots of orange, yellow, blue etc. Just a patina though. Inside, just like brown petrified wood in appearance. And, Texas Turritella. This is all over the hills and creekbeds around my house. It's limestone but does supposedly polish. As you can see though, ehh color and not much contrast. Not turritella either but rather Cerithium sp. shells, clams etc replaced by silica. Closeup showing a Cerithium shell

Daniel: Yep, I've seen the greenish stuff too but not from this area. I've seen some orangish material too. I have a line on another location out by Chapell, Texas and there's supposed to be an excellent fossil location there too so I'll make a trip out there next spring. A buddy and I went exploring last summer too and may have a line on a location for that dark matrix limestone with crinoids in that same area......Mel

Not that bad of stuff Mel. You think you could stain or somehow induce color to that turritella stuff to funk it up a little? Cut a cab and soak it like an easter egg maybe? Might be fun...

It almost looks like the matrix in the turritella would turn a bit darker as you work it. I suspect that chert will be glass like when you get it polished! Fran
