Preparing to start my first project. I read the advice on www.rocktumblinghobby.com. Now I am looking for a hobbyist that has specific recommendations for using a Viking RT-6 (older model is VT-6) Tumbler. Attached is a picture. I read that the Viking tumbler barrel configuration is more effective than the more common drums that spin horizontally. Purportedly it takes less tumbling time. Can anyone confirm that? Is the tumbler useful for all grits and polishing? Can the grit be cleaned effectively from the barrel to use with polish or do I need to purchase a separate barrel? Any issues with the machine? Links to reputable and reasonable sellers of rocks? Thanks, Steve in OH.

Sorry, no first hand knowledge. Use it as you would any rotary. The "faster" in theory is due to "triple action". Rocks go round, angled bowl cause rocks to also move up and down, large side flats cause rocks to change direction. You'll have to see if cycles are faster. Before I started traveling full time I tumbled a lot and never had a dedicated polish drum. A thorough washing should work. A friend has a VT6 and only complaint I've heard is slurry leaks out of opening. From what I've read here, The Rock Shed is most people's tumble rough source. I'd contact Mary Anne (stonesthatrock) and Tony (catmandew) to see what they have as well as watch the "buy, sell, trade" page. Welcome to the forum.
