Hello all,
Does anyone know where to get a replacement bearing for the Lortone FL-15 vibrating flat lap? I've tried calling Lortone a couple of times, and apparently there's only one guy there who can answer the question, and he works hours that would make a banker jealous, and won't be around again until after the holidays....
Thanks!

Most fair size towns have a bearing sales and service dealer of one kind or other. Get the number off the end of the bearing and get to calling around. You will probably get a replacement bearing for pennies on the dollar compared to going direct to the manufacture.
EXAMPLE
I own a 10 inch Raytech slab and trim saw. The factory will NOT under any circumstances send ME a set of replacement bearings. I am NOT qualified to replace them myself ! I HAVE to buy the WHOLE bearing, shaft and housing assembly from THEM.
COST -------- $95.00 plus shipping !
(11), ELEVEN HOURS after I replaced the assembly and realigned the blade the bearings shot craps AGAIN !
I decided the game was over because they obviously do not have anyone at the factory that is qualified either.
I took the (tits up ) bearing assembly to the local bearing dealer and told the counter man what the problem was and we started going thru catalogs. Here's one the guy says, it was a bearing assembly out of a truck's water pump! I Pressed the old collar onto the shaft and trued up the face in my lathe before I threw it back in the saw, and started sawing like someone possessed . I kept track of the hours on the saw for 6 months and gave up trying to log the hours. That was 2 years ago ! The cost was $5.65 per assembly minus 25% discount for buying in quantity. This one looks like it's going to live forever and what I am going to do with the other 5 bearing assemblies I haven't a clue !
If you bother to do a little calling you may find a BETTER bearing for a whole bunch less.
Factory service and quality products / jest ain't what they usta was !
If you are not into (do it yourself ) you could let an electric motor repair shop look at it and give you a quote. Some of those old boy's find a project like that a refreshing change of pace !

If you can accurately measure the ID and OD of the bearong pretty much anything with those dimensions should work. When installing it you'll have fun centering the motor so everything is lined up properly. Lortone will soon be putting a brand new design of vibratory lap on the market, it looks like a vast improvement.

I buy all my barrings at McGuire Bearing company. I just hand them what I want to replace and they measure it then get me the part out of the warehouse. Great service! Here are their locations and web site. Oregon: Portland, Salem, Eugene Washington: Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane Idaho: Boise, Idaho Falls Utah: Salt Lake City www.mcguirebearing.com/

Lee,
Do you have any more information on the new lap from Lortone? Any links?
Thanks! Chuck

Ha! Good luck dealing with Lortone.... I have a 19" vibra lap which tore the bearing out several years back and called them. The only thing I got was an excuse that the bearing cannot be replace and I had to buy the entire power head assembly. So I finally rigged something myself by finding a bearing supply outfit and believe it or not I found a Massey Furguson Tractor bearing which was almost an exact match. I recently had dealing with them again on the motor (finally burned out after 30 years) - and again it was a joke dealing with them. So I found a after market motor and had a new bearing plate machined from aluminum (Luckily for me I have a good buddy who's a machinist) and basically custom made my power head assembly. So far I have not had any good luck with Lortone. I know several other people who laugh at their service as well. So yeah I suggest like the other fine folks have mentioned - measure the bearing inside diameter, outside diameter and even look at the bearing case to see if there's a number. Sometime you can cross reference the number and find an exact match. I buy all my bearings from www.applied.com/ mainly cause I have a buddy who gets a price break, but overall they always have everything in stock and I can buy it over the counter. Good Luck!
