This month has been a _itch with the chemo, one trip to the ER two days before Christmas. It is too cold in the shop to slab and cabbing is out because it dries my hands out and they will crack (possible infection). So . . . I am trying to plan a trip for when the weather starts getting good. I would like to go up to Biggs then down 97 to Madras, Prineville, then I think on down towards Burns Juction, Rome, Jordan Valley and up again to home. I will take my time and camp hopefully at some good collecting places out in the boonys with a couple of cheap motel nights thrown in. Can anyone suggest any good spots where I can look for rock and camp? It'll just be me and my guard dog(hahaha, all 6 pounds of him), shotgun and trusty side arm.

Nancy: Contact the Prineville Chamber of Commerce, and get the central Oregon rockhounding map from them. It is $6.00, has good pictures, directions, etc, all on one big map.
Make sure you stop at elkins rock shop in Prineville, and dig through the ten cent a pound pile. This is like a treasure hunt. No matter how much rock is sold from the pile, it never seems to get smaller. Judy Elkins will thow almost anything in it that she will not take the time to sort, then, the locals will will just dump old estates in it. This pile is probably the best place to find material that is now eiether dug out, or closed the public and etc, that you can find. If you happen to see a four door fire engine red F-350 ford truck anywhere near rock, I will be somewhere nearby!
Also, if you stop at the road cut just uphill (south) from Biggs you just might find some Blue Biggs that has fallen off the cut from the original site. Do not climb up and dig, because the Oregon smokies will ticket you. Woody

Wow! Thanks Woody! Great info there. I have printed it out so I will have it with me and it would be really great to run into you. I'll let you know when I might go, thinking like the end of May or into June sometime. Definately as soon as there is stable weather.

Hi Nancy, Usually at the end of June is the Prineville Pow-wow, cool rock show and field trips. The next weekend is usually the Madras rock show, with field trips scheduled, some to some collecting areas that are only open on that weekend.
Good to see you feeling like getting out! Happy New Year.....................Tony

Nancy - When you head into this area give me note and your more than welcome to stop by my place. I have a small shop in The Dalles. I can give you some papers to area's in Prineville region. However keep in mind you won't be able to access the Ochoco's untill late springs. Depending on the snowpack each winter plan on being into the hills between May and June.
For the Biggs area, there's a few thing to look for, but be very cautious where you go as it's kinda no mans land. Like many localities some "clubs" and unrespectful people have ruined the area for collecting. Most area's are private property and the land owners have no sense of humor for rockhounds.
There's a couple area's around The Dalles here I can show you... One is for small "tumble sized" pieces of Petrified Wood, and the other is behind town about 10 miles and we collect various materials brought in by the great missoula flood. Some of the rock is from Montana, Idaho, and Oregon all deposited in a mass of gravel. I have found Agate, Jaspers, Petrified Woods, Fossils etc.. in this mess of rocks.
Anyrate I'm sure I can get you fixed up with something to do in the area. If you get here late enough in the year I also own two Thunderegg claims in Prineville area.
Happy New Year!
Jason
