Steve:
You need 40 to 200 X magnification to ID most conifers from a piece that has good cell structure. Hardwoods are easier, many of which can be ID'ed by eye or 10X magnification. Many conifers are hard to ID when they are not petrified, and ou can weigh them burn them, smell them etc, so when petrified, wood is much harder to ID.
All the same, you have what looks like a full round that shows cell structure, and has really good colour, and contrast. Woody
