Just got home on Sunday, and just let me say although I loved Huatulco it is not a rock collectors dream vacation. Don't get me wrong it was a great holiday. The scenery was awsome, the people were friendly, not a time share salesman to be seen and they made one hell of a good margarita. There just wasn't too many good rocks. Take a look at this place for example. I was pretty excited that with my limited Spanish I got permision to look for rock in there. What did I find? Crumbly granite. Nothing good at all. Or how about that river you see here? Still looks good up close. Nothing but lime stone up really close. I did find a few good ones though further down the river where it enters the ocean by Playa La Bocana. From the beach at La Bocana its a bit of a hike accoss the rocks/cliffs. Once over the rocks there is a really fun spot to float down the river that my kids loved and best of all a big gravel bar with some good rocks. I even met a Mexican rockhound here that showed me one type of rock with bright orange crystals. I found one of them but I'm not sure what they are called. My Spanish just isn't that good. I also found this in a vacant lot in town, but it was constuction left overs from the lot next door dumped there. Its kind of banged up calcite and I'm not to sure where in the mountains it came from.

You're right, not great regarding the rocks but the scenery is great. What a hoot to be able to take a swim in open air during Christmas time! It looks you loaded your batteries for the cold weather you have to face with.

It looks like there are some Quartz veins exposed on those Granite cliff faces, you should have taken your Gold pan along !
Hind sight is 20-20 right ?

I thought the same thing Harley. Just look at the black sand and garnet in the beach by the river. Gotta be a few flakes in there.

Old post but the wife and I are heading to Huatulco this weekend and I am hoping to have better luck than you did in the rock hounding department! Have been scouring the net on and off for the last couple weeks looking for any potential info on this exact subject haha. In any event I am certain we will have a blast!

TommyCan the pics be fixed on this one? Please and thank you Is it just me or is Photobucket down? Not working for me. Down detector indicates it has had problems for about 18 hours. Maybe give it a day?

TommyCan the pics be fixed on this one? Please and thank you Is it just me or is Photobucket down? Just the typical hiccup "You may have noticed that we experienced an unexpected service interruption today. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you. On October 4, our datacenter provider made a change that inadvertently resulted in a loss of internet access to our website. Even though we have redundant connections in place for just such an occurrence, their actions impacted access to those redundant networks. Remote teams began working to restore access as soon as the outage began. As we understand it, the issue has been resolved within the last couple of hours. We truly appreciate your patience during this down time."
