Here are current pictures of the obsidian batch that is almost finished. If I am looking at these correctly, there are Mahogany, (I think) Snowflake, (possibly) Spiderweb, and a couple of others I have not seen before. Everything you seen on or in these pieces are the makeup of the pieces and not tumbling problems. Here is the link from the last post I made and after that are the pictures of the almost done. Some of the pieces appear to have small fractures. They are not fractures. Had I left these in the 120/220 another week or so I think I would have them smoothed. But as I have learned, a little time in either rough stage can take away more mass. All of the pieces are perfectly dry and have a close to perfect polish. They are cool!! Let me know what you guys think and as always ... Thanks!!!!! forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=trtphoto&thread=35142&page=1

Snuffy .... that batch is not lost .... not by any stretch ...
That batch is gonna be gorgeous .... just a couple of hints based upon my own screw ups. And we all know how I can mess up an obsidian.
In the rotary in 60/90 for another ... I would say for 2-3 days un interrupted and then check. You should see loss of pits and grooves.
Then in the rotary again with 120/220 for about 5-6 days un interrupted, you will start to see the matt finish.
Once you see this ... then into pre polish for approximately 5-6 days and then your matte should start to show up as polished.
Then into final polish for 5-6 days and your babies will be awesome!!!
I cannot wait to see these!!!
These pieces as they are now ... are really pretty ... they just need a little TLC ... I have gone through this a few times and will probably go through this a few more times as each batch seems to have its own personality and persnickety behavior.
I really want to see pictures as you progress.
I have learned from all the other RTH'ers that taking and posting pictures as you progress through each stage, even if it is repetitive, shows me how the batch is behaving.
I also want to make sure that I say this for new members. Even after 1 year I still have logs for each and every batch I do.
I make notes for every stage and how I see each stage as they are progressing.

NANCY!!! Hi there!!! thanks .... obsidian is such a crazy rock to work with. But .... man on man ... it is pretty!!!
One more thing .... I have learned ... (you guys haven't seen the batches that I really messed up with no turning back)
Never, ever mix an obsidian with anything else .... ever!
Even the softest of other rocks can really wreak havoc on obsidian.
Thanks All

And .... others have different opinions ... mine is but one
I would never put obsidian into a vibe. The vibe is too agressive.
In a rotary .... lots of cushion.....
In my rotaries .... for cushion .... I use lots of plastic pellets.
Most of you already know .... it is really important to not mix cushioning media as with the vibes.
I keep big ziplocs of the various stages plastic pellets so as to not contaminate final stages.
This is just me .... I will hush now.

Hey, these tricky tumbles (and I know all about the lows and highs of tricky tumbles) are what keeps us tumblers on our toes you guys (and appreciating the easy tumbles, if there is such a thing). No go get 'em!

The batch looks very good. A friend gave us some obsidian. It has pieces he knaped and stuff that looks like your rough. I have two 3lb barrals loaded. We will post pictures of the rough this week. Is it harder to tumble then other material? Debby and Tom
