Welcome. I just bought a couple of new barrels so I won't mix the grits. I hope to buy a Lortone double, I haven't been doing this long, so that is a big step for me. Post pics of your stones. Ed

Hello from Haida Gwaii.
I have been an avid agate collector. We walk all the beaches here and even some open pits to find raw agates and other stones. It has become the focus of most of our family outings. My husband bought me a large tumbler a few years ago, but now I want to get into cutting, polishing and making jewellry out of my collection.
Can anyone give me some pointers on equipment? I want to purchase novice tools until I master the art......
thanks for your help, Dana

Hi Dana, welcome to the board. I can tell you what NOT to buy, and that is the Inland swap top machine. Two flat lap machines that are good for cabachons are Hi-Tech and Ameritool. Both are excellent. For the vertical machines, there are a lot to choose from . Go to kingsleynorth.com and to jsgemslapidary.com John at jsgems is a member on here and will treat you right. Ken

Thanks Ken (and ASI for the media coverage)
So to get started I need a polisher and a lapidary saw w/ vice........cost together about $1,000.00
anything else recommended......after getting stones ready.....do I need a saudering kit?
thanks again for the help. Dana

No soldering kit needed. Go to Wire wrapping thread and look at Randy's tutorial on wirewrapping. This is a whole lot cheaper than soldering(silversmithing). If you have a Home Depot or Lowe's you can get a 7" tile saw that works great to get you started. Been doing this for many years(I invented dirt) and I still use the tile saw occasionally. You can begin cheaper by tumbling your rocks. BUT, it takes a minimum of a month to get your first batch finish polished. A grinder will let you see results in a hour or two. Hope this helps. Ken
