I have 3 different types of polish. Alumina TXP is the one I have been using, recommended when I first started tumbling, one I inherited when my dad gave me his thumlers B, just says step 3 on container has a slight pink color & another container that has step 4 written on it, very white, whiter than the alumina. Trying to figure out what step 3 is and what step 4 is so I know how to use them. Would anybody have any clues. I know #4 is a polish because of how it feels on my finger when I try to wash it off. Thanks - Donnie

Howdy Donnie, The pink step #3 material is probably tripoli prepolish. It's the same prepolish I use. Normally the white polish for the final stage is some form of aluminum oxide. It could be tin oxide or titanium oxide but both those are fairly expensive and usually kits contain cheaper materials. The other pinkish/tanish material you sometimes see in kits is cerium oxide but that again is more expensive and would be a stage four polish. Sometimes you also see optical grade cerium which is whiter and one of the final polishes I use on pads but again, this is more expensive so not usually in kits....Mel

Thank you, Mel. I forgot to mention that on the step 3 pinkish color stuff is does say polish on it. Actually, I just looked at in sunlight and is is more tan than pink. I just ordered some tripoli as I am running out of the aluminum oxide 800 I have been using for prepolish. Got that from Eloxite last year. Too expensive there so I switched to tripoli and ordered that as well as more of the grits from the rock shed. I have been using 60/90, 120/220, 500, 800 and then polish. The tripoli will be taking the place of the 800. Thanks again - Donnie
