My 2 cents: royal_sahara_jasper gets two thumbs up, though I don't think I ever won one of their auctions. They are George & Janet Sechler, great people.
maplestuff typically has a fine variety in his auctions, IF you can afford to win any of them! -whew- Nuff said. west coast gems sometimes has decent stuff, but none of it tempts me anymore. I won a slab that had been sealed with who-knows-what... probably superglue or waterglass... and the filling quickly dissolved in the water of my cabber, leaving unforseen pits, voids and cracks. NEVER again, after that fiasco.
I have personally had a number of bad experiences on eBay, including receiving a piece of (junk) sodalite instead of the covellite described and illustrated by the seller (no longer a registered user). That was years ago. More recently, one seller sent nothing at all! Just disappeared. One thing to always bear in mind with eBay: If you have to go through their process for a refund, it'll cost you $25 off the top. That's built right in to their so-called "Buyer Protection" program. It's a no-brainer to be cautious with sellers that have very few feedbacks, balancing that with the understanding that dealing with sellers having lots of feedbacks won't guarantee smooth sailing or the arrival of a good product. It helps that it is now possible to leave honest negative feedback ratings for sellers that really deserve them without the risk of ruining one's own buying reputation; eBay should have made that change long ago.
Off eBay, I've found that Gem Center USA has good material for the money, wholesale to bonified businesses. Hand select rather than ordering by mail, if possible, but I do know several lapidaries who are consistently happy with what they order. Have fun!
