For 5 days my family and I had been hearing a scratching noise coming from the basement, we couldn't identify what it was or where it was coming from. On Thursday we finally found out it was coming from the chimney. We tried putting a rope down it, so the little critter could climb out, and when that didn't work, Dad was threatening to burn him out! We had a better idea, and decided to get him out ourselves. When we took the pipe off, we found a scared little female gray squirrel. She was tired, hungry, and a bit dehydrated, but she was still very much alive. We put a net over the hole and tried to get her to go up the rope, but the rope was tangled, so it was blocking her way to climb up! She was growling, and crying, but eventually, we got her in the net and set her free. She ran and hopped away as fast as she could. Oh yeah, she chewed up the climbing rope too...dad wasn't too happy. Thanks for reading! ;D

I'd never burn a little animal out of a chimney!! (you'd never get rid of the smell) ;D

Seeing what that little critter did to the rope and then looking at the net; good thing he was too scared to chew. Glad you got him out safely and maybe time for one of those screens that cover the chimney top.

I was thinkin' a little roasted squirrel wasn't gonna be so bad! ;D Not really though... you know the dad thing... "I should just fire it up hot and burn it!" It was great watching her hop away free, even though I lost 60 or so feet off the rope! ;D

I haven't seen a climbing rope in years! I miss climbing. I used to be an arborist. That looks like a 9/16 rope. 5/8 was too large, 1/2 was too small. Squirrels can make a real mess of things. I have been in a tree, and had a squirrel jump on me and make a mess! They can be real agressive. Glad she got out. Too small to eat.

Awe, you did a great job with sticking with it and getting that squirrel out! They can be so stubborn even when you are trying to help them out! Hopefully she does not try that again! Fran

ugh! we get starlings in the chimney every spring, dang things. we had a bat in there one year too. thankfully we've never had a squirrel.....whatever hole or loose edge the birds and bats get into, it's not big enough for a squirrel.....yet. we get squirrels in the garage, which is annoying. rats with pretty tails if you ask me!

Does anyone put a screen over the chimney to keep the things out to begin with?
Great job getting her out alive.
