hi all,
need your expertise on polishing, i polished shells with aluminum oxide for 8 days, look good but not a high shine. i burnished for 30 hours with borax, the polish was really white going in but sort of a grey color coming out, is this normal or did it get contaminated. any help would be appreciated. thank you jas

i think as soft as shells are even the polish stage will take some of the shell away and discolor the slurry -- ive never tried to polish shells but id like to see yours when you finish-- my family has a house in cape may NJ. right near the beach and i usta find cape may fake/diamonds haha there cool but far from a diamond--- but done right they can be water clear when finished -- and i was always bringin home shells from the back waters where i fished allot i usta brush them to clean and then let sit in the sun and bleach white had some real cool ones and now I'm thinkin how nice they would have looked polished so post some pics of yours when there done

its always a good thing to run for awile in borax/ivorysnow or some kind of cleaner to make sure you get off the last stage before you polish cause just alitte of the last stage can give you problems in polish -- and yes even if you have to use a tooth brush on the barrel lip and so on a good cleaning of the barrel is needed-- best thing is get another barrel and just keep it for polish this way you can pick your shells or rocks out and reuse the polish a few times also
and the plastic beads are great for cushin so they dont chip each other but make sure if you use them for polish/other grits you label them so they dont get mixed up they can carry grit with them even after a wash
