Great tutorial Darryl!
As for drill speed, Yorkshire Jack recommends a much slower speed (rpm) to extend bit life. I haven't drilled any stones for a while, but it's worth a shot. You might ask him what speed he uses.

I stopped using screw eyes and instead drill a larger hole totally through the bead. Like you, I tumble preformed beads I shape out of rock slabs. What I do now is drill through the profile of the bead and then silver solder a large ring of sterling through which the chain can then slide. This totally eliminates the possibility of coming apart, as a screw eye can still come out if subjected to enough heat to weaken the glue. c.a.

I also agree with the comment about using a flex shaft. I switched to a flex shaft a few months ago and find it much easier to control my drilling that way.

Does anyone ever drill a hole straight through a pendant from front to back and then put a larger jump ring on it?

Jump ring (silver) heart pendant (Blue Agate) silver chain. Made 7 of these hearts for Christmas presents! One other trick for drilling accurate holes is a dremel drill press. Center up and the handle will help with your drill "bounce" I personally start the hole under water, at a certain depth I then hand hold dipping the stone quite frequently. The hole has enough water for the drill. (mainly agates) Other stones need the tub as a lot of "mud" is generated. (the drill dust when dry is mud with water) When drilling I use the tinys, and the 1.5s and on really hard stone you can't be impatient unless you happen to have access to free drill bits. Some times you have to "dance" the bit to get a bite,(tilt the bit very slightly like "dipping" lol) and when drilling through a stone you HAVE to be straight, in the photo, if my exit hole was left or right just a smidge, it would show. the next size up burr will also "dress" a hole that looks kinda beat up. Excellent, excellent tutorial! Follow that lead for any drilling, and ALSO make sure your work area is just as neat! It will pay dividends. FINALLY! If you have bits that are too small/large for your dremel, it is your excuse to outfit that tool with ALL the collets (5) and a CHUCK, plus some of dremel's new quick change accessories. BUT! DEPOT is closed, so is the hobby store! WELL! Try heat shrink tubing! Tape and foil wrap have a high spot where the "end" of the wrap is. I have had drill wires cross the line and become whirling miniture weed whackers. Oh yes they do cut real good too! check for wobble prior to turning on the tool. ;D

Wow...being totally new in this hobby, this was truly an awesome tutorial....now at least I can make the wife a necklace! Thanks for sharing your info. Tools I actually have too! Bonus! I suppose it I were to pen some polished knife slabs to my knives, this method would work in some way.

Good, right on tutorial. I've never drilled for a pendant, but I drill for rings. The clamps are a great idea.
It's important to lightly bounce the drill press core drill up and down to let water enter the hole and keep everything cool. Love those core drills!

Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I have the tools to start drilling but unfortunately I cannot find a supplier of these kind of findings in the UK. Are they known as the same thing in UK? Grateful for any tips.
Thanks again Ian
