I have been using 800 grit for my prepolish. Some stuff I got from Eloxite when I first started tumbling. Well I was almost out & shopping around for more when I realized how expensive it was compared to tripoli which a lot of others use as prepolish. I just took my last batch out of the two 3# tumblers tonight, both started at the same time and guess what-----the one I used the tripoli in came out a lot shinier than the one with the 800 grit. Enough so that I could probably skip the polish, but I am going to do it anyway just to see if they get shinier! Donnie

Yep, I've been using tripoli for years as a prepolish and I find it yields the best results of anything I've tried. You're right too. I find a long tripoli run almost brings the stone up to a mirror polish but I still finish with a good long run in AO....Mel

Tripoli is a really cheap pre-polish that you can find anywhere that sells lapidary grits/polishes.

Paul: I get my tripoli from the Rockshed, www.therockshed.com. He's got good prices and ships fast. As to what it is, I think it's a fossil earth type powder made from minute skeletons of marine life but basically, it's just a gray to tan powder used as a good prepolish....Mel

Being that I use my vibes from 220-polish I use both ,the 1000 grit and Tripoli. It only takes 1/2 teaspoonful/4.5 lbs of rocks so why not splurge and use both? lol
I've found that if I run the 1000 for about 24-36 hrs and just add 1/2 teaspoonful of Tripoli and run tat for another 24-36 hrs I get a shine that in most cases needs no polish run.
Running the 1000/tripoli is an "over lapping" due to grit break down. When I add the Tripoli the 1000 has broken down to almost the same size as the Tripoli and after running the rest of the time the Tripoli just makes the rocks shine like a mirror.
