Some girls like flowers and candy, some girls like jewelry. I like to get muddy and go stomp around in the rain for rocks LOL
As most of you know, we just moved 3 months ago. While our whole area is covered in hills, mountains and evergreens.......we now live right off the Columbia River in an agricultural area consisting of stands of poplar for the pulp wood industry, nurseries, gravel quarries, and farms. There is water all around.....in channels and sloughs and many dikes holding it all back. Basically, the whole area is a flood plain. The name of the town even means "gravelly plain". It really is lovely. All of these photos were taken just a couple of miles from our house.
First stop, the creek. Its pretty high this time of year but there was still a small gravel bank. Lots of sandstone, quartz and conglomerates and a little jasper. It starting raining right here but fortunately it stopped long enough for pics.
Up the road a bit...
Here is what we were looking for....when they log the stands of poplar, they pull all of the stumps out of the ground. The machinery ends up churning some river rock out of the ground. While most is just nondescript conglomerates, sandstones and quartz, every now and then we find a good one. In fact, the best find of the whole weekend was found in one of these piles.
It started pouring right about then! I didnt think it was going to stop that time. But it did, and look what appeared.
Ok.......up the road again. Hey stop!!! Do you see the three blacktails?
Some old willows. I just love willow trees.
Some of the many channels, sloughs etc. that surround this area. I didnt manage any photos but today there was a big fat muskrat in one of these channels, and yesterday a cute little baby one that I followed a ways up the road.
An old homestead still standing......barely.
Egrets
An owl, couldnt get a clear photo. Missed the one of the hawk too.
Oh!!! I almost forgot. Our best find. In amongst the river rock conglomerates and quartz, a piece of agate jumped out at me. Its a very rare occasion that we find agate........most everything around here is drab basalt. But this nearly one pound chunk was just sitting on top of the others begging us to take it home.
On the outside it looks like typical Carnelian. We wanted to cut it and use it for something special.
But once sliced, we were pleasantly surprised at the colors and patterns....white, orange, yellow and even some pale lavender/pink.
Thank you for the wonderful afternoon sweetie. Rocks, great scenery, rainbows, mud, rain, deer, hawks, muskrats, egrets, owls......what more could a girl want!
And thank you all for looking,
Shannon
