Hi, Chris,
Last Sunday I pulled a few out of polish to have a quick look and they were polishing well. However, one had developed a crater, so I added some more ceramic shapes and a TB or so of borax to thicken stuff up a bit. This Sunday will be two weeks and I will likely remove them.
In my random "rinse and check" I didn't get any of the real light colored ones, so they may not be polishing as well.
BTW, I am polishing in aluminum oxide--thought about using the cerium but didn't.

Hi Gang, Well as Susan said the 2 of us have been keeping in touch just about daily on our progress(or lack of it)and found that the most difficult thing to overcome (so far) has been re-occurring pits. The pits seem to be "layered" and knowing when to move each rock forward to the next step seems to be the clue here? I finished roughing about a week or so ago and started out in the vibe with 220-500-1000-1000/tripoli and now rapid polish #61 with a "tad' of Raybrite "A" gem polish. I checked the rocks yesterday morning (Monday 8/31) and they had a very nice shine to them but not what I figured could win 1st place so I added the Raybrite A just to see if it really makes a difference. "If',,,ha-ha-ha,,,,I can get these rocks to look EXACTLY the same dry as they do wet I think I stand a chance but that's a tall order at this point. They were almost there yesterday and I hope by adding the Raybrite A does the trick! Best of luck to all the contestants!! a link to the home page,,,, orovillerocks.com/a link to the competition page,,,, orovillerocks.com/announcements/Rock%20Tumbling%20Contest.htmconnrock

Finally! Hello everyone. Well, finally finished these contest rocks. This has been one of the tougher tumbles-due to the stubbornness of these babies to take a shine. Here are some photos for you to take a look and perhaps make a pre-contest judgment on them. The whole load beforehand. And after. Some close-ups. Before. After. Before. After. Before. After. The final 1/2 pound cut. And here are the bulk rox,. They came out much nicer! Thanks for looking. Let me know what you think. -Chris

Thank you Tanya, what a kind thing to say! And Rockrookie, 3 out of 5 RTHers is amazing. But--it is here that we see so many tumbles, good, bad and indifferent, and it is here that so many people are willing to freely trade their tips, tricks, photos, horror and success stories. With such a tremendous database to draw from, our (or at least my) entries are a compilation of all the learning experiences of everyone who contributes to this board.
Susan
P.S. And it also means that at least one of us will place--Woo Hoo!

WOWZER!!!!! 3 out of 5 and I'll bet there may be 1 or even 2 more here who are lurking in the background too! I really didn't think I stood a chance this year with all the reoccuring pits and not that I'm making excuses but during the last stages of polishing we had to have our dog Homer put to sleep and my heart just wasn't into finishing these rocks. So,,,,being in the top 5 is really a nice surprise for me!
For what it's worth,,,Susan and I have been PMing each other every day since this contest started. We have exchanged ideas, techniques and you name it trying to help each other to get the VERY best out of these pitty rocks! I don't know where else anyone can find people like Susan and the rest of you who are willing to share what you know and try to help as much as you do,,,,,especially during a contest like this!
Thank you all for being you!
