Are there any RTHers planning on entering the World Rock Tumbling Championship this year? I think I will enter to get a real-world critique of my work. You'll never get that on RTH! You're simply to kind and supportive. I'm looking for cruel commentary. Here's the details cut from the website.
Darryl. The Feather River Lapidary and Mineral Society (FRLMS) Proudly Announces: The Second Annual World Rock Tumbling Championship This contest is open to everyone, in every country, who would like to see how they rank in the popular worldwide field of rock tumbling. There are no age limits or other restrictions. Here’s how it works: Send in a completed application (see link below) with a $40.00 entry fee postmarked no later than May 1, 2010. We will send you, via USPS Priority Mail, about 4 pounds of Royal Nevada Jasper tumbling rough from a private mine in Nevada within two weeks. Then, you will tumble the rock in a rotary or vibratory tumbler and mail a half pound (1/2) of your best pieces back to us for judging (You may grind the rocks with an 80-grit or coarser wheel to remove cracks and flaws in Stage 1). The entries must be received by us no later than September 25, 2010. Once your entry is received, it will be assigned a number and your name will be known only to the contest coordinator. Steve Hart, author of the book, Modern Rock Tumbling, has agreed to evaluate each entry on the basis of smoothness, shape, shine and overall appeal. He will select the top five entries to be displayed at the FRLMS Rock and Gem Show held in Oroville, California the first weekend of October. Everyone attending this Rock and Gem Show has a chance to cast a ballot and the top three winners will be determined by popular vote. The results will be announced at the end of the show. This year’s prizes are: 1st Place: $250 Cash + Perpetual Trophy Inscription World-Wide Bragging Rights 2nd Place: $100 Cash 3rd Place: $ 50 Cash We are hoping that every rock club will sponsor their top tumbler(s) for both the chance to win and the valuable experience of competing! This will be especially exciting for your club’s junior members. We are asking all Rock Clubs, Lapidary Shops and Equipment Manufacturers to post this notice so all their members and customers hear about this contest. To download your Application form, please log on to www.orovillerocks.com . Please mail the applications, with a check or money order made out to FRLMS, by May 1, 2010 to: FRLMS Contest Headquarters, P.O. Box 2645, Oroville, CA 95965 Good Luck!

I will not, as I'm not set up with tumblers yet. But I hope to jump in next year. I'll bookmark the site. Thanks for the heads up, and good luck.

After doing a search to find out what Nevada Royal Jasper looks like, I think I'd gladly pay $40 to get 4# of it even if I didn't ever send any finished product in for the contest. This stuff is beautiful! Check out the pics posted here nevadaroyaljasper.com/index.php Makin' me drool!! After looking at all those luscious pics, I thinks I'm gonna have to scrape up $40 and enter that contest. I gotta have some of that!

Definately thanks for the working link! I was juiced for the competition. Now I'm juiced for the rock.
Lets see ... they send you 4 lbs. You grind away 1 lb in the tumbling process and you enter 1/2 lb in the competition. That's leaves you with 2 1/2 lbs. as a consolation prize!
It's a little pricey, but it's a whole lot nicey!
Darryl.

Good luck in the competition Darryl! That is some beautiful rock, and you win a prize just by entering.

Connrock entered a tumbling competition last year but I'm not sure if it was this one or not. I think he got third but I'd have to check with him. That is some serious cool rock and I will enter just to get some of that stuff.

Wow pretty stuff! It appears to be a wonderstone/rhyolite type material rather than a real jasper but it must be highly infused with silica because it sure is shiny in those pics. Wonderstone can sometimes be very challenging in the tumbler so that should be an interesting contest....Mel

Hi Gang, Yes I did enter the competition last year and will enter again this year. I thinks it's great as it gets us to try our very best and see how well we really do at this great hobby. I placed 3rd last year and won a Lortone Tumbler which I sent as a Christmas gift to one of our troops in Afghanistan who is keeping all of us safe here in the USA. I tried to promote interest in the competition and also show some of our new people what it actually takes to go through the entire tumbling cycle by taking a series of photos from start to finish. I can't tell you what a pain in the butt it was to take the photos but I think it was well worth the effort.(i won't be doing that this year) ;D You can view the photos at this link.I'm sorry for the inconvenience of having to go through a lot of photo's that may not interest you but I didn't create a separate album for the competition rocks. The competition rocks start at photo #141 imageevent.com/tcknkk/rocksnstuff?n=0&z=9&c=3&x=1&m=24&w=0&p=0I think one of the most interesting things you'll find is how much weight is lost during the process,,,,in the rocks that is,,,,I didn't loose a single pound!! lol For those of you who prefere not to view the photos here 2 that show the rocks in the rough and when they were finished,,,, I sincerely hope to see a lot of you join in on the fun of the competition this year! It's run by a great bunch of people who put a LOT of work and effort into it,,,,,, See ya all there!! connrock

I got my rocks a few days ago, and what beauties! I am fighting back the desire to simply e-mail and say "they're mine, they're mine!
Anyone else? Thoughts? I found them *very* difficult to break, great colors, but the light colors seem softer than the deeper reds. They're in 60/90 as we speak, and I likely will sneak a peak in the next few days.
This batch looks like it could take the entire contest time to make it through rough grind--but I see the potential for this turning into separate batches.

i was wondering how many of us entered , also . i got mine 5-16-10 i resized a few as it says in the rules . i was going to save some out to cab . but , i figured i could save a few later . the colors resemble wonderstone . although some have the texture of being Opalized . and 1 peice looked just like Bloodstone (green & red) i took several before pixs . i thought that i may post them later . i started mine in a 12 lb barrel ( my batch that i received was a little less than 3-1/2 lbs i also put several lbs of other rocks in that could not be confused . eventually all of the royal Nevada should fit in a 3lber or possibly 2 seperate with some filler . Good Luck to all !! --paul

I got very large pieces--I had no choice but to resize. One piece I haven't broken up yet is about five inches long. The judge's book (Modern Rock Tumbling) says to break rough into one inch pieces, but some of the patterns were so spectacular I left them at about two inches. Probably shouldn't be ignoring the advice of the judge--but--one must do what one must do!
I have a few that are rhyolite patterned (although hard) but the majority are marvelous mixes of maroon and other deep reds and brown.
It sure will be hard to send them the "best" half a pound.
I would love to hear from others doing this competition.

Hi All,,,,
I got my rough as well and have it tumbling in 2 separate 6lb Lortone barrels. I mixed in some snow white quarts to fill each barrel. My rough was pretty well mixed as far as the size of the rocks goes. I did "clean' up some sharp edges but for the most part they went tumblin' as is! I didn't take any photo's this year cuz I got "photoed out" last year and figured I'd let someone else have the fun of doing it! LOL
I've never tumbled rhyolite,,,,wonderstone,,,Nevada Royal Jasper before so it should be fun!
I was pretty up-set with myself for not winning 1st place for quite a while last year but eventually recovered! LOL
No matter how fast ya think you can draw yer six-gun,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,LOL
I do hope to do the best I can this year but I'm NOT setting my goals as high as last year!
And who says ya can't teach an old dog new tricks??? LOL
Best of luck to all who entered!! connrock
