Started working some of the PruHeart agate I bought a while back. Going to use it in a project for my silversmithing class. It was stabilized with superglue because the red is druzy and softer. It is now 22x35mm but I will need something closer to 18x32mm, so more grinding. Here is a virtual mockup of the project. I 1st thought I would use Owyhee, but I decided to use PruHeart. I think I will use a square tube instead of round. It will be 31mm where the round one is 35mm, so that is why the stone will need to get a little slimmer. I will not be able to put this exact texture on the silver, but something close. Also, I hope to get the edges to turn up slightly so the stone does not stick out from the metal so much. Lots of details to navigate still. ---------------- OK, here are pics of the finished finding, and the newly downsized pregorund (180g) stone. Stone needs to be sealed again in the red drusy areas. should sit something like this

Wow, Daniel! The cab is beautiful but the design of the pendant is FANTASTIC! It's great you take silversmithing classes, you got a real tallent in creating beautiful designs.

I agree--the cab, agate and design are all great. I *really* like the design. Please share what method you intend to use to texture the silver--the drawing almost has a driftwood feel to it.

WOW that cab is really sweet, I think it is so cool how you do those virtual mock ups, I am one who has to see stuff, to visualize it, I wish I could do that. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Hopefully only a few weeks to see the finished project. The weekly class should keep me focused.
Susan - I will use a rolling mill to put the texture onto the silver. The one you see is the "canvas" texture from the PhotoShop textureizer. I don't have that exact texture to roll onto the silver. Possibly I could have tried with some type of fabric, but a lot of pressure is needed to get much imprint from something soft. I have some brass plates with assorted textures, and I plan to pick one that is more or less horizontal in its pattern, but not too large.
The tube and rings is a pre-made piece purchased form Fire Mountain - I am all about buying ready made parts. All I need to do is solder it to the textured plate, and if possible bend the edges of the plate into a shallow cup to hold the stone.

Beautiful cab and great idea for pendant. I am in my first six weeks of silversmithing and still on first project. I had to make something spatial out of 6" x 6" sheet of metal. I made a spirit horse. Daniel, I love to use the rolling mill and one of my favorite textures is regular screen wire. It turned out pretty good. I want to try some coarse grade sandpaper. And you know those wire screens you use in paint buckets? They are diagonal. I thought that might be cool too. Thanks for the inspiration. Glad to see you back in the saddle again Daniel.

Daniel, that's awesome! I've only just begun trying to use the little bit I learned in my one-day class, and I've a question for you: How do you mount the cab onto the backing? Do you make a bezel and then solder it to the face of the back plate, or do you simply glue the cab to the back plate? I'm really struggling with the bezel-making process.
